Château Saint-Pierre Red Bordeaux Blend St. Julien 2007

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Herbaceous on the nose but also sweet with rich, ripe Cabernet black currant fruit edged in earth and tobacco, very Bordeaux – soft entry, stylish, fresh and honest with brisk tannins and acids, slightly simple black olive and tobacco tinged black currant fruit, touch of bell pepper, soft tannins extend onto a slightly earthy, moderately long finish, lovely wine (91-92)

This estate has had a long history and several owners since it was first planted with vines in 1693 when it was owned by the De Cheveney family. It was named after a Baron Saint Pierre who bought it in 1767.In the 1855 clasification it was a Fourth Growth. It was bought by the late Henri Martin in 1982 although he had previously bought some of the vineyards to make up his Chateau Gloria estate. He invested a great deal in the vineyards and in the Chateau building where the present owners Francoise and Jean-Louis Triaud, his daughter and son-in-law now live.At only 17 hectares it is one of the smaller classed growth estates and unusual both in that vinification of the grapes takes place not on site but at the neighbouring Chateau Gloria and that there is no second wine as any grapes or wine deemed not up to standard are sold off to a negociant.
