Château Saint-Pierre 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Olive, herbal, and graphite come together on this classic Bordeaux nose aging gentle hints of smoke and oak with air. A decidedly happy wine, smooth but tight, with nice mineral tinged tannins, plenty of ripe fruit, and classically proportioned with small tannins that are a little austere and steamy. There's a hint of cocoa and almost jammy red currant fruit on the long, light, fruit driven finish. Not a powerhouse but a great little wine. 92pts

This estate has had a long history and several owners since it was first planted with vines in 1693 when it was owned by the De Cheveney family. It was named after a Baron Saint Pierre who bought it in 1767.In the 1855 clasification it was a Fourth Growth. It was bought by the late Henri Martin in 1982 although he had previously bought some of the vineyards to make up his Chateau Gloria estate. He invested a great deal in the vineyards and in the Chateau building where the present owners Francoise and Jean-Louis Triaud, his daughter and son-in-law now live.At only 17 hectares it is one of the smaller classed growth estates and unusual both in that vinification of the grapes takes place not on site but at the neighbouring Chateau Gloria and that there is no second wine as any grapes or wine deemed not up to standard are sold off to a negociant. I bought this bottle of wine from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/80304 for £20.My bottle had clearly been well kept because the level was wel;l up into the neck.Saint Julien is an AOC created in 1936 for red wines from around the village of Beychevelle on the east coast of the Medoc peninsular some 20 miles north of the City of Bordeaux. It is a small but very prestigious appellation with 11 classed growths in the 1855 classification including Chateau Saint Pierre as a fouth growth. My bottle is made from a blend of 75% cabernet sauvignon,15% merlot and 10% cabernet franc from vines averaging 50 years in age and aged in oak barrels for 18 months..I started my bottle last night with my supper of roast pork and I did enjoy it.There is plenty of a blackcurrant style fruit there with tannins just strong enough to give structure and there is a hint of licqorice or cigar smoke. It is very smooth and mellow and it did not show its age.. It is a lovely wine but not quite as good as the Haut-Beychevelle Gloria from the same Saint Julien appellation and the same owners I had about 6 months ago
