Château Saint-Pierre 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Olive, herbal, and graphite come together on this classic Bordeaux nose aging gentle hints of smoke and oak with air. A decidedly happy wine, smooth but tight, with nice mineral tinged tannins, plenty of ripe fruit, and classically proportioned with small tannins that are a little austere and steamy. There's a hint of cocoa and almost jammy red currant fruit on the long, light, fruit driven finish. Not a powerhouse but a great little wine. 92pts

Herbaceous on the nose but also sweet with rich, ripe Cabernet black currant fruit edged in earth and tobacco, very Bordeaux – soft entry, stylish, fresh and honest with brisk tannins and acids, slightly simple black olive and tobacco tinged black currant fruit, touch of bell pepper, soft tannins extend onto a slightly earthy, moderately long finish, lovely wine (91-92)

Dark colored wine with a great tobacco and fruit nose. Black fruit with spice and tobacco on the palate. Smooth tannins and a great finish on fruit. Balanced.

The history of this estate goes back to the 16th century. Records from 1693 refer to a property known as "Serancan" belonging to the Marquis of Cheverry.* In 1767, during the reign of Louis XV, the vineyard came into the possession of the Baron de Saint-Pierre, who gave his name to the château. His two daughters inherited the estate in 1832. In 1855, Saint-Pierre was classified as the first of the fourth great growths. After Madame de Luetkens sold her share of the château to Léon Sevaistre in 1892, Saint-Pierre was sold under two different labels: "Saint-Pierre-Sevaistre" and "Saint-Pierre-Bontemps- Dubarry". In 1922, both parts of the vineyard were acquired by Belgian négociants, with the exception of the winery buildings, which were bought by Henri Martin from the baron's last heir in 1981. Henri Martin purchased the vineyard in 1982, thereby reuniting an estate that had been split up for many years.
