VARIETAL COMPOSITION: 70% Merlot 10% Cabernet Sauvignon 10% Cabernet Franc 10% Petit Verdot VINEYARDS: 52ha (128 acres) on a clayey-chalky brows dating from the quaternary era. The vines are 35 years old average with a density from 6,500 to 10.000 plants per hectare SUSTAINABLE FARMING: Leaf-plucking & shoot thinning, green harvesting (one grape per cane), laying a permanent or punctual vineyard cover crop, creating large canopy area to allow good aeration, sustainable treatments and amendments WINEMAKING: Cold pre-fermentation in stainless steel tanks, long maceration between 40 and 45 days at 28°C in new oak barrel on fine lees, malolactic fermentation & lees stirring in barrel, Diatomites Earth filtration BARREL AGEING: Micro-bullage, aged on lies with regular bâtonnage during 3 months. 18 months aged in tanks and oak barrels (95% French oak and 5% American oak) - Winery

Jean Guyon's determination to succeed in everything that he undertakes is just as deeply rooted as his vines at Begadan, in a clayey limestone hilltops. With his usual straightforwardness, Jean Guyon clearly acknowledges to have taken all the necessary financial and human steps to make Rollan de By a reference point in the Medoc. His ambitions, as a vine-grower are very precise : to increase the standing of this appellation with the help of the owners in this sector of the northern Medoc, far too often underestimated, and let people discover the riches of this terroir. Since then, Chateau Haut Condissas (in 1995), Chateau Tour Seran (in 2000) and Chateau La Clare (in 2001) have come along. These estates together with Château Rollan de By form a viticultural unity of very high quality in the Medoc appellation. Read less
