Chateau Rollan de By Medoc Kosher 2013

External Review:

At a price that is very manageable for an authentic Bordeaux from a great year, you will want to enjoy this over and over, appreciating it as it ages. With a core of cassis and seductive spices that waft from the glass, the flavor profile is rich and hedonistic featuring black cherry, plum and rounded vanilla.

Jean Guyon's determination to succeed in everything that he undertakes is just as deeply rooted as his vines at Begadan, in a clayey limestone hilltops. With his usual straightforwardness, Jean Guyon clearly acknowledges to have taken all the necessary financial and human steps to make Rollan de By a reference point in the Medoc. His ambitions, as a vine-grower are very precise : to increase the standing of this appellation with the help of the owners in this sector of the northern Medoc, far too often underestimated, and let people discover the riches of this terroir. Since then, Chateau Haut Condissas (in 1995), Chateau Tour Seran (in 2000) and Chateau La Clare (in 2001) have come along. These estates together with Château Rollan de By form a viticultural unity of very high quality in the Medoc appellation. Read less

Aromas of black cherries, damp earth and cedar show with air, leading to a luscious, rich mouthfeel. Seductive and sophisticated, this wine is well-deserving of its number 96 ranking on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2010.

Vintage: 2008 11/20/2013

As usual, this is a delicious northern Médoc, with the 2008 displaying a dense ruby/purple color as well as sweet notes of black fruits intermixed with damp earth, lead pencil shavings, roasted herbs, and spice. Medium-bodied with good flesh, dense fruit, and sweet tannin, it should drink nicely for a decade.

Ripe but restrained, with nicely sinewy embedded, structure carrying solid black currant, black cherry and fig fruit, followed by graphite and sweet earth on the finish. Drink now through 2011.
