Château Rollan de By Cru Bourgeois Médoc Bordeaux 2011

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought two bottles of this wine for £12 from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctionms/show/127219. Geographically, the Medoc is the entire peninsular north of the City of Bordeaux but the appellation of that name created in 1936 only refers to the 16 communes at the northern end.The area is sometimes called the Bas-Medoc or Lower-Medoc though not on wine labels. There are no classed growths here although there are a number of Cru Bourgeois estates such as Chateau Rollan de By, which is one of several estates owned by Jean Guyon. My bottles consist of 70% merlot and 10% each of the two cabernets and petit verdot.I started the first bottle last night with my supper of roast chicken. There is plenty of a blueberry, blackcurrant and plum style fruit with a hint of vanilla and some soft but structured tannins. This is an absolutely beautiful claret and I am not the only one to think so because it got silver medals at the Concours Agricole Paris and at the Decanter World Wine Awards. It was also extraordinary value for money

Jean Guyon's determination to succeed in everything that he undertakes is just as deeply rooted as his vines at Begadan, in a clayey limestone hilltops. With his usual straightforwardness, Jean Guyon clearly acknowledges to have taken all the necessary financial and human steps to make Rollan de By a reference point in the Medoc. His ambitions, as a vine-grower are very precise : to increase the standing of this appellation with the help of the owners in this sector of the northern Medoc, far too often underestimated, and let people discover the riches of this terroir. Since then, Chateau Haut Condissas (in 1995), Chateau Tour Seran (in 2000) and Chateau La Clare (in 2001) have come along. These estates together with Château Rollan de By form a viticultural unity of very high quality in the Medoc appellation. Read less
