A monumental effort, the 2001 Rieussec boasts a light to medium gold color in addition to a fabulous perfume of honeysuckle, smoky oak, caramelized tropical fruits, creme brulee, and Grand Marnier. The wine is massive and full-bodied yet neither over the top nor heavy because of good acidity. With intense botrytis as well as a 70-75-second finish, this amazing Sauternes will be its apogee between 2010-2035.
Wow what a beautiful pale golden color (clean and clear). Absolutely intoxicating aromas of peach, ripe citrus, and apricot confiture. Shows tons of botrytis but remains fresh and lively on the mid-palate. Lots of toasty marshmallow and charred oak w... Alex Lallos. A Sauternes Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2008 Rieussec 750ml
Quite exotic and intense toasted coconut, honey and vanilla flavors, but the fruit seems buried by new oak character and it tastes a bit hot on the finish. Might improve with age.
Splendid, elegant, intensely spicy botrytis character, rich and fat, kept in balance by an undertow of lemon-laced acidity. Drinkable now, or can age until 1998.
A huge nose of honeyed pears and tropical fruit is followed by a deep, rich, full-bodied wine with great presence on the palate, enough acidity to provide grip and focus, and a spectacularly long, lusty finish that is neither too alcoholic nor heavy - a common problem with many 1990s. Is it as superb as the 1988 or 1989? I doubt it, but it is still one of the stars of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 1995-2015.
This is a stunningly complex and elegant wine, but it is less muscular as well as less fat than either the 1983 or 1989. There are plenty of smoky almonds, peaches, and honeyed apricot fruit in the nose and flavors. In the mouth, the wine has a certain elegance, and perhaps not quite the punch one normally expects from Rieussec. Nevertheless, it is still a compelling Sauternes that should age magnificently. Anticipated maturity: 1994-2010.
The 1990 Rieussec is one of the stars of the vintage. It is a fat, rich, very broad-shouldered wine, with great depth and richness, and considerably more alcohol than the 1988. I did not detect as much botrytis as I would have hoped. Nevertheless, it is a blockbuster, massive wine. Its evolution should be fascinating to follow. Anticipated maturity: 1998-2015.
"...a lifted, honeyed, slightly petrolly nose with great definition and lift. Touches of white flowers and white peach/honeysuckle develop with further aeration. The palate has a vibrant orange and mandarin flavored entry, very good balance, nicely poised with touches of vanilla inflecting the viscous, honeyed fruit on the finish...91-93" WA 4/09
