What to Expect

The great sweet wines of Bordeaux, Sauternes, are among the most decadent, complex and simply enjoyable wines. Based on a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc that has been infected with the "noble rot", Botrytis Cinerea, Sauternes are rich, honied wines bursting with notes of vanilla, coconut, dried apricots and subtle spice tones. They are usually very sweet and rich with a soft quality to them that makes them appealing in their youth yet they can age and improve for decades. The neighboring village of Barsac frequently makes wines comparable to those of Sauternes.

Winemakers Notes

D'Yquem still seems to be head and shoulders above everyone else in Sauternesbut Rieussec is part of the select group - made up of Climens and Suduiraut -chasing for the second spot. This is better than 2003 but a little bit behind2001 in terms of gravitas and zingy acidity. It is nonetheless a cracking winewith immense class, intensity and elegance plus firm acidity that provides abackbone for the rich fruit. Made from 91% Semillon, 8% Sauvignon Blanc and 1%Muscadelle, it combines purity with great balance., while very pure, richapricots with hints of fruit peel abound. Drink 2010-2030.
