Château Rauzan-Ségla Red Bordeaux Blend Margaux 1999

Winemaker's Notes:

As with most 1999s, there is a higher than usual proportion of Merlot in the blend. Not a blockbuster by any means, indeed this wonderful Château is not suited to such a style. The 1999 Rauzan displays excellent balance between ripe tannins and fruit. Drinking from 2004.

The history of Chateau Rauzan-Segla started in the reign of Louis XIV, when Pierre de Rauzan acquired the estate in 1 661. This wealthy man, a leading and well-reputed Bordeaux wine trader, also became the tax farmer of Chateau Margaux and Chateau Latour. Over the years, generations of the Rauzan family succeeded to the running of the estate, as they were to become Counsellors of the Bordeaux Parliament as well. Rauzan-Segla wines grew in reputation in a remarkable way and were some of the most highly rated in Bordeaux. They delighted many well-known figures, most famously Thomas Jefferson who came across this wine during his visit to the vineyards of Bordeaux, placing an order for several cases of it. He thus became a fervent admirer of Rauzan-Segla wines. Some decades later the 1855 classification ranked Chateau Rauzan-Segla as a Second Growth. Frederic Cruse, the estate's owner, had the current chateau built in 1 903. He approached the architect Louis Garros, who drew his inspiration from the original Perigord-style buildings in the construction of the chateau, as well as G. Le Breton to design the park and green spaces. Then time went by, and the Chateau gradually fell into a slumber... It wasn't until 1 994 that the complete renovation of the estate returned the Chateau and grounds to their original splendour. The patina of age, the climbing rose bushes, the hydrangeas, blond Bourg stone and verdant lawns - today everything radiates the tranquil calm of a residence filled with opulent charm. Read less

Feiner, runder Wein mit herrlichen Tannine. Kräftig und vollmundig, starker Geschmack nach Waldbeeren und Cassis. Ein absolutes Highlight!
