Château Rauzan-Segla Margaux Ex-Negociant 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

"This is a fabulous wine. A very giving wine with an amazing nose of currants, strawberries and flowers. This is a gorgeous wine. Full and powerful, with chewy and ripe tannins and a long, long finish. A serious, structured wine that still needs some time in the bottle. Don’t touch this for another five or six years. Pull the cork after 2016....97" JS 05/12

The history of Chateau Rauzan-Segla started in the reign of Louis XIV, when Pierre de Rauzan acquired the estate in 1 661. This wealthy man, a leading and well-reputed Bordeaux wine trader, also became the tax farmer of Chateau Margaux and Chateau Latour. Over the years, generations of the Rauzan family succeeded to the running of the estate, as they were to become Counsellors of the Bordeaux Parliament as well. Rauzan-Segla wines grew in reputation in a remarkable way and were some of the most highly rated in Bordeaux. They delighted many well-known figures, most famously Thomas Jefferson who came across this wine during his visit to the vineyards of Bordeaux, placing an order for several cases of it. He thus became a fervent admirer of Rauzan-Segla wines. Some decades later the 1855 classification ranked Chateau Rauzan-Segla as a Second Growth. Frederic Cruse, the estate's owner, had the current chateau built in 1 903. He approached the architect Louis Garros, who drew his inspiration from the original Perigord-style buildings in the construction of the chateau, as well as G. Le Breton to design the park and green spaces. Then time went by, and the Chateau gradually fell into a slumber... It wasn't until 1 994 that the complete renovation of the estate returned the Chateau and grounds to their original splendour. The patina of age, the climbing rose bushes, the hydrangeas, blond Bourg stone and verdant lawns - today everything radiates the tranquil calm of a residence filled with opulent charm. Read less

Powerful nose of cassis, blackberry, and other dark fruits with earth and oak notes as well. Medium-full body with acidity that is definitely there but not overstated. Supple berry and dark fruit flavors on the palate with just a hint of earthiness, a touch of oak, and a hint of vanilla as well. Good overall balance. Very finely textured tannins. The finish is lengthy and maintains a good balance, with maybe just a touch of alcohol. This wine still is a bit young and would probably benefit from more bottle aging. Still, this was a very enjoyable wine. Strong 4 out of 5.

Opaque black with purple. The nose is aristocratic, fine, pure and classy, so reserved yet easy to assess. The fruit quality is astounding as are the tannins, which are already beautifully integrated. Outstanding wine that reveals exceptional terroir and brilliant winemaking.
