Chateau Rauzan-Segla Margaux 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

#2 of the Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2008"Very beautiful aromas of crushed berry, flowers, currant and Indian spices follow through to a full body, with ultrafine tannins and a long long finish. Extremely polished and beautiful, with a seamless texture....97"-WS 3/08"One of the most beautiful Rauzan-Seglas made in decades, this blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest primarily Merlot and tiny dollops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot exhibits a gorgeous perfume of spring flowers, subtle mint, black cherries, black currants, licorice, and a hint of new oak. It offers medium to full body, sweet tannins, and a layered mouthfeel that builds incrementally to a sensational finish. Although this beauty is performing well, it remains a decade away from its plateau of maturity. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030+...94" -WA 04/08

The history of Chateau Rauzan-Segla started in the reign of Louis XIV, when Pierre de Rauzan acquired the estate in 1 661. This wealthy man, a leading and well-reputed Bordeaux wine trader, also became the tax farmer of Chateau Margaux and Chateau Latour. Over the years, generations of the Rauzan family succeeded to the running of the estate, as they were to become Counsellors of the Bordeaux Parliament as well. Rauzan-Segla wines grew in reputation in a remarkable way and were some of the most highly rated in Bordeaux. They delighted many well-known figures, most famously Thomas Jefferson who came across this wine during his visit to the vineyards of Bordeaux, placing an order for several cases of it. He thus became a fervent admirer of Rauzan-Segla wines. Some decades later the 1855 classification ranked Chateau Rauzan-Segla as a Second Growth. Frederic Cruse, the estate's owner, had the current chateau built in 1 903. He approached the architect Louis Garros, who drew his inspiration from the original Perigord-style buildings in the construction of the chateau, as well as G. Le Breton to design the park and green spaces. Then time went by, and the Chateau gradually fell into a slumber... It wasn't until 1 994 that the complete renovation of the estate returned the Chateau and grounds to their original splendour. The patina of age, the climbing rose bushes, the hydrangeas, blond Bourg stone and verdant lawns - today everything radiates the tranquil calm of a residence filled with opulent charm. Read less

Powerful nose of cassis, blackberry, and other dark fruits with earth and oak notes as well. Medium-full body with acidity that is definitely there but not overstated. Supple berry and dark fruit flavors on the palate with just a hint of earthiness, a touch of oak, and a hint of vanilla as well. Good overall balance. Very finely textured tannins. The finish is lengthy and maintains a good balance, with maybe just a touch of alcohol. This wine still is a bit young and would probably benefit from more bottle aging. Still, this was a very enjoyable wine. Strong 4 out of 5.

Named #2 Wine of 2008 and 97 points Wine Spectator The outstanding ChÂteau Rauzan-Segla makes structured, muscular red Bordeaux in the most classic style. Full-bodied and tannic, with a long, very dry finish, these wines have impeccable Cabernet

In 1661, Pierre des Mesures de Rauzan, an important winemerchant in Bordeaux, acquired the vineyard and gave his name to the estate. For two centuries generations of the Rauzan family succeeded in the running of the property and the Rauzan-Segla wines grew in reputation in a remarkable way. This Margaux, ranked as a Second Growth, was reborn in 1994 when Chanel became its owner. At that point, everything was set in motion to restore the reputation and rank of this gem of the Margaux appellation. Painstaking soil preparation, pruning, handpicking, sorting of grapesàare some of the precautionary measures vital for the quality of the wines produced. Rauzan-Segla wines offer a generous bouquet with clever elegance expressing the internationally recognised characteristics of the Margaux terroir
