The history of Chateau Rauzan-Segla started in the reign of Louis XIV, when Pierre de Rauzan acquired the estate in 1 661. This wealthy man, a leading and well-reputed Bordeaux wine trader, also became the tax farmer of Chateau Margaux and Chateau Latour. Over the years, generations of the Rauzan family succeeded to the running of the estate, as they were to become Counsellors of the Bordeaux Parliament as well. Rauzan-Segla wines grew in reputation in a remarkable way and were some of the most highly rated in Bordeaux. They delighted many well-known figures, most famously Thomas Jefferson who came across this wine during his visit to the vineyards of Bordeaux, placing an order for several cases of it. He thus became a fervent admirer of Rauzan-Segla wines. Some decades later the 1855 classification ranked Chateau Rauzan-Segla as a Second Growth. Frederic Cruse, the estate's owner, had the current chateau built in 1 903. He approached the architect Louis Garros, who drew his inspiration from the original Perigord-style buildings in the construction of the chateau, as well as G. Le Breton to design the park and green spaces. Then time went by, and the Chateau gradually fell into a slumber... It wasn't until 1 994 that the complete renovation of the estate returned the Chateau and grounds to their original splendour. The patina of age, the climbing rose bushes, the hydrangeas, blond Bourg stone and verdant lawns - today everything radiates the tranquil calm of a residence filled with opulent charm. Read less

The 1995 exhibits the greater maturity achieved by the Cabernet Sauvignon grape in this vintage (over the 1994). It reveals a deep dark purple color a sweet ripe intense nose medium to full body some tannin excellent concentration an attractive layered feel and sweet ripe fruit. The chateau compares the 1995 to a 1988 only riper. I found it closer to the 1986 with lower acidity and more jammy fruit. This wine requires 6-8 years of cellaring. It should prove to be a classic Margaux

Like so many wines of the 1995 vintage this offering has fattened and fleshed out developed more explosive ripeness and richness in its aromatics. As a result it is a more intriguing and compelling wine. The opaque purple color is followed by copious amounts of sweet cassis fruit intertwined with scents of cedar licorice and toasty oak. Dense and full-bodied with an explosive finish this is a glass-staining intensely-concentrated large-scaled full-bodied Rauzan-Segla that may be one of

This wine was consistently outstanding from cask and I suspect it may eventually merit an even higher score but it was totally closed when I saw it in November. Unfortunately it was one of the few wines that I was only able to taste once after bottling. Nevertheless it is a classic vin de garde with a saturated ruby/purple color and a tight but promising nose of sweet plum and cassis fruit intertwined with underbrush vanillin and licorice scents. The wine is ripe medium to full-bodied
