Chateau Rabaud-Promis Sauternes Premier Cru Classe 2009

Member Review by duncan 906:

This bottle of wine was part of a lot I bought on the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/80826. Sauternes is a prestigious appellation [ created in 1936 although viticulture here goes back centuries ] for sweet white wines from 5 communes around the tiny village of that name close to the town of Langon on the west bank of the river Garonne about 25 miles south of the City of Bordeaux. The sweetness arises because of using late harvest grapes affected by a fungus called botrytis. My bottle comes from Chateau Rabaud-Promis which is one of the top producers in the appellation It consists of 80% semillon,18% sauvignon blanc and 2% muscadelle and is aged in oak barrels. .I started my bottle last night with a plate of bread and cheese and I did enjoy it.It is very sweet, almost like honey or syrup and there is a lot of a pear, peach and apricot style fruit with hints of vanilla and citrus It was not quite as acidic as the negociant sauternes [Prince de Saint-Aubin ] that I had back last summer. It is a lovely wine with lots of flavours to excite the drinker

It is still a very prestigious Sauternes estate Read less
