Winemakers Notes

Tasting Notes :A sleeper of the vintage, the deep ruby/purple-tinged 2004 Prieure-Lichine is all about finesse and flavor intensity. Not a blockbuster, but rather a wine of sensual appeal, it offers superb aromatics of cherry liqueur, underbrush, cedar, and spring flowers. Silky and soft, with medium body, beautiful fruit, and a depth that builds incrementally, this consumer-friendly Margaux can be enjoyed over the next 12-15 years. This defines charm.

Vintage Notes

2004 was a textbook year : flowering in June, late and mixed veraison (August 15), slow but tasty maturation. Once again, that was the secret of the vintage : no haste, no greed. God forbid uncontrolled yields and slapdash work in the vines ! As always, the quality of the fruit determines the quality of the wine. Harvesting started on September 30, 2004 (last day of the harvest in 2003) and ended three weeks later, on October 20. Vinification started 3 days after cold maceration and the first pumping-over operations : three or four times daily up to 1020, followed by a slow reduction until the last of the sugars. Long to very long vatting times (25 to 30 days), combined with total maturity, ensured optimal tannin extraction. The ageing of the wines will not break with the philosophy of Prieuré-Lichine. The wines have been in barrels since November and the various batches will be kept separately until bottling : a Cabernet from Arsac is not matured like a Merlot from Soussans : only the precision of all operations will guarantee the final quality. To date, the wines are powerful, racy, sappy and harmonious. The Merlots are bursting with fruity aromas and the Cabernets have that “special little extra something” of the greatest Médoc Cabernets. The legendary elegance of Margaux combined with the power of the Médoc Cabernets.

deep dark ruby, somewhat full-bodied. velvety berry nose, with floral and black tea on the back. somewhat rough tannins. just barely tart, a decently long finish.

Really solid Margaux. Hitting its sweet spot. Red berries, soft tannins, nice complexity.

Rating: 16/20 - As reviewed by Le Point on 2005. Très joli nez de rose rouge, cerise, un peu pinot bourguignon, bouche très fine en attaque, tendre, s’affirmant ensuite, des notes mentholées de cabernet mûr, finale resserrée portant le fruit.

Rating: 91 pts - As reviewed by Gault & Millau on 2005. Très Margaux
Robe grenat foncé. Nez intense de cassis, de mûre et d’épices d’une belle complexité. La bouche est veloutée et charnue avec de jolis tannins fins, d’une belle longueur avec une finale très ouverte d’épices.
