Château Prieure Lichine Margaux Grand Cru Classé 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

The vineyard which provides the grapes for the production of white wine was created in 1990 on a small 1.5 hectare plot in the commune of Arsac. Thanks to the vineyard's sandy-gravel soils over a subsoil of clay, the wine achieves amazing complexity. Its fatness and aromatic finesse are brought by an ageing on fine lees in Burgundy barrels that are renewed by one third each year.

Opaque, with a faintly sweet, classy black fruit nose and a stylish, well-balanced palate impression. The tannins have been handled with a very deft touch. This is a tremendously successful Prieure-Lichine, expertly vinified and assembled, which shows off its terroir to the maximum. Fine and stylish and a definite must buy.

The finest Prieure-Lichine I have ever tasted, the sensational 2005 has unquestionably benefitted from the improvements made at this property as well as the consultation work of Stephane Derenoncourt. Its dense purple color is accompanied by a glorious perfume of forest floor, blackberries, incense, and cassis. Opulent, with sweet tannin for the vintage, excellent purity, and a savory, broad, expansive mouthfeel that lingers on the palate, it possesses the delicacy of a terrific Margaux as well as enough concentration and power to give it an extra dimension. This wine should be drinkable in 4-5 years, and last for 25 or more. Bravo!

(Barrel tasting) Blackberry and coffee aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and a medium finish. Showing a lot of wood now, but serious fruit.

Significant improvements are noticeable at this Margaux property now that Stephane Derenoncourt is the winemaking consultant. The 2005, perhaps the finest effort from this estate since the mid-sixties... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2005 Prieure-Lichine 750ml
