What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Reviews

Rating: 93/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 108, May/June 2003 ($50-$65) Deep red-ruby. Explosive nose combines raspberry, roasted currant, grilled nuts and exotic spices. Rich, sexy, silky and full in the mouth, with expressive flavors of black raspberry, game, smoke and truffle. Finishes with strong but suave tannins and excellent length. St. Julien

Beautiful precision and elegance. Reminded me of a baby '00 LLC. Laser-like focus and sweet cassis licoricey fruit. Lots of mineral and cigar box on the nose with very sweet fruit and ripe tannins. Like an undualting wavelength though opening and closing every five minutes . . . but man what fruit. Tremendous juice.

This showed well but not as well as it could. Maybe this was closing down. Classic Pauillac nose of tar, leather, tobacco and a melange of red and black fruits. Even some sweet corn after five minutes in the glass. Dense and delineated with ripe, fat, silky fruit. Very finesse. Fruit takes over your mouth. Good inner mouth aromas and great length.

Extremely pretty aromas of mineral, blackberry and raspberry. Full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a medium finish. Well-crafted red. The best Pontet-Canet ever. Best after 2010. 2,330 cases made. (JS) Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2000 Pontet-Canet 750ml
