Full-bodied and powerful, with ultrafine tannins that last for minutes on the palate. A polished, thought-provoking wine. Shows wonderful purity of Cabernet Sauvignon. Best after 2014.Wine Advocate ReviewRated 96+The work that Alfred Tesseron and his winemaking team have done at this estate since 1994 is remarkable. At this fabulous terroir just south of Mouton-Rothschild, Tesseron has made major investments, and instituted incredibly severe selections in both the vineyard and winery. The result is a succession of extraordinary wines. It is difficult to know whether the 2005 Pontet-Canet will ultimately eclipse the hedonism and density of the flamboyant 2003, but it is unquestionably a stunning effort. Inky/black-colored with a classic Pauillac perfume of licorice, black currant liqueur, graphite, cedar, and spice box, it is full-bodied, with magnificent concentration, formidable tannins, and an Arnold Schwartzenegger-like structure (when he was 25 years younger). This backward, formidably endowed 2005 will require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2040.
Château Pontet-Canet's estate finds itself in the heart of Pauillac's Appelation. In 1975, the reputable cognac collector and me r chant , Guy Tesseron, became its new owner and today, his sons Alfred and Gérard have carried on his legacy and have progressively restructured the estate. Starting with a model vat house: influenced by the Eiffel style and constructed at the end of the nineteenth century, the oak vat room was revolutionary for its time as it was designed on two floors enabling the harvest to be received on the top floor and thus to be poured by gravity into the vats below. Inspired by its innovation, 2005 has given way for a new vat room unique to the Médoc, still respecting the gravity concept yet modern. The Inox vats have moved on and left room for smaller cone-shaped cement vats, enabling a vinification in smaller volumes and therefore a better selection thus more precision.
More flesh than grip, with mulled plum and blackberry fruit laid over graphite and cedar hints. Theres a flash of tobacco, though the mulled fruit is the main feature. Drink now through 2013. -JM Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2008 Pontet-Canet, Hauts de 750ml
This is dark and brooding, with a tarry wall holding the black currant, melted licorice and espresso notes at bay for now. Extra roasted sage, cedar and briar push in on the finish, which shows an old-school hint. Rock-solid. Best from 2013 through 2... Wine Spectator.
