What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Opened up and let air for about 30 minutes. At first, there was some leather like qualities that picked up on in the glass. On first taste there was evidence of ample fruit with mild acidity giving rise to a moderate finish. I found a nice balance of both fruit and some oak, but not overwhelming. I will finish the bottle on the second night to see if any additional notes come to mind. A great wine for the vintage. Drink up (89 pts.)

A mature and balanced claret, with a floral nose and a lot of cedar, cigar box, and tar on the palate.

Very intense colour. Extremely complex nose characterised by hints of liquorice, red and black berries, and vanilla. Very big attack. As the wine develops on the palate, it reveals an impressively powerful, long tannic structure, and very smooth tannins. The well-balanced finish is dominated by long, lingering aromas. A very great wine. Vine varieties : Cabernet Sauvignon 61%, Merlot 34%, Cabernet Franc 5% Degree : 132

Rating: 88/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 102, May/June 2002 Good full ruby-red. Plum, tar, cedar and a hint of herbaceousness on the nose. Plummy and moderately dense, with warm notes of tar and tobacco. Finishes with less ripe tannins that show a hint of dryness.
