Château Plaisance Bordeaux Bordeaux Supèrieur 2005
Based in the village of Vacquiers in the south east part of the appellation, Marc Penavayre makes wines that are a sheer delight to drink. The vines are planted on the highest terrace of the Tarn at an altitude of about 200m. The soil is composed of alluvial deposits, essentially pebbles, gravel and silt. These deposits provide a check to the vine's vigour which is what is needed to produce quality grapes. The grapes are not destalked, but cuvaisons are relatively short: 6 days for Gamay; 7-8 for the Négrette and a bit longer for the Syrah and Cabernet. He makes several styles of wine. This year we have acquired a soupçon of the cuvée above the cuvée so to speak 'Tot So Que Cal': 50% Négrette, 40% Syrah, and 10% Cabernet with eighteen months in new oak. Explosive nose with wild dark fruits, exotic oriental spices, soy and new wood. Ample mouthfeel, dense and packed with fruit and powerful yet refined tannins, a concentration achieved with yields of below 20hl/ha. If Ribes wines lean towards the Rhone in accent, Penavayre's seem more Burgundian, but who cares - let's celebrate diversity.
Scarlet-colored with generous, youthful fruit. The scents are diverse and range from crunchy red cranberry and blueberry to pomegrante and açai. Not only are the aromas agreeable, so is the palate. The mouth-watering acidity, round tannins and light extract make this an easy-drinking wine. Modest finish. 13% abv

Deep, inky purple, this powerful, yet refined red is 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. Toast and cedar envelop the plush blueberry and black raspberry fruit notes. With a rich, enticing nose and a silky-smooth mouthfeel, the Château Plaisance maintains classic structure at a very reasonable price.

Good red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of plum, currant, mocha and tobacco, complemented by chocolate and leather nuances. Sweet, lush and pliant, with moderate depth but good grip to the flavors of current, tobacco and earth. Finishes with ripe, supple tannins and good lingering fruit. A forward and satisfying 2005 at a gentle price.
Deep ruby color in the glass with subdued aromas of forest floor, black currant and cassis just managing to eke through on this young red. However, entirely drinkable now with an abundance of dark fruits coating the palate along with loamy earth flavors and cedar spice. Densely packed, scrumptious AC Bordeaux suitable for early to mid-term consumption, but should also age well as the wine is balanced and finely structured with well-integrated tannins.
