Château Pichon-Longueville Baron Red Bordeaux Blend Pauillac 1982

Winemaker's Notes:

100 points Robert Parker: One of the monumental wines of the last century is the 1982 Pichon Lalande. Since bottling, it has flirted with perfection, and was a sprinter out of the gate, which gave rise to questions about how quickly it would begin its decline. However, at age 27, it retains all its glossy, rich, flamboyant cassis fruit, chocolaty, berry jam-like notes, and plenty of earthy, foresty flavors. This is a full-bodied, extravagantly rich Pichon Lalande seemingly devoid of acidity and tannin, but the wine is incredibly well-balanced and pure. It is an amazing effort! (Jun 2009)

This blockbuster was a sleeper of the vintage long before the Rothschilds invested so heavily in modernizing this estate as well as began making a stricter selection. This wine continues to be the finest example I have ever tasted from this estate. It has surprised me in one blind tasting after another with its power, complexity, and concentration. The 1982 reveals a dense, opaque ruby/purple/garnet color, and a huge nose of cedar, sweet cassis, and spice. The wine's full body, marvelous concentration, that 1982-like opulence and unctuosity, and a thick, jammy, moderately tannic, superb finish... Robert Parker. ( 155) Full red with a hint of amber at the rim. Aromas of plum syrup redcurrant cedar minerals coffee and earth with a tight core of spice. Thick sweet and plush with lovely restrained sweetness and solid underlying minerality. As rich as this is its firm spine of acidity and substantial ripe tannins should enable it to develop for at least another 10 to 15 years. My second bottle was more bound-up and muscular in style but very Pauillac and of roughly the same quality with lovely acidity and grip. Now through 2020. 92(+?) points Stephen Tanzers IWC.

Given its sweet creamy personality this wine can be drunk now or cellared for 20 more years. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

Big surprise. Dark ruby with a garnet rim. Cassis berry tobacco cherry. Incredibly complex. Full-bodied incredibly velvety with masses of fruit currant berry tobacco. Never that highly rated but seriously good. Drink now or hold.--1982 Bordeaux horizontal. (JS) Wine Spectator.
