- This one has gained further depth and complexity since I last tasted it. Lot's of lead pencil, graphite covered with cassis and elegant subtle tobacco and oak. The aromas jumped out from the decanter filling the room. Opulent, powerful but at the same time elegant and perfectly balanced. Lingering finish. [92]

- Rubi color with just a slight evolution on the rim. The nose is intense and upfront with saddle leather, cedar box and cassis. Good body, very balanced, expands on the palate and leaves a very pleasant lingering finish. It is definately drinking great right now, but does have potential to gain further. [91]

- We put this 99 Baron side by side with the 99 Comtesse to see how they would fare against each other. While the Comtesse de Lalande showed a slight purple hue the Baron showed a more evolved brownish one. You could see they had different styles already by their color intensity but no advantage for any so far. The nose was the first victory for the Baron, more intense and open with lot's of cassis and secondary notes. The Comtesse was more shy and only showed some of her dark fruits, more like plums and blackberries. On the palate things got tighter, now it's more a matter of personal preferences. read more...

99's weren't stellar in Bordeaux, but, Pichon Baron is always a very good wine. These are drinking well, but lack concentration that you will find in the 2000's/2003's and 2005's.
It's always a fairly priced wine that is a sure winner regardless of vintage.
