Winemaker's Notes:

Aromatisches Schwarzkirschen- und Kaffeebouquet, nobel und delikat, mittlerer Druck. Saftiger, eleganter Gaumen, sehr geschmeidige, angerundete Tannine, würzigen Cabernet im Extrakt zeigend.

It wasn't mere chance that led Bernard Phelan, a young Irish wine broker, to leave his homeland at the end of the 18th century and settle in Bordeaux. At that time, the city was a major trading centre with the British Isles. The families that did business together, buying and selling the wines produced in the region, formed close tics. These relationships sometimes led to marriages, and notably that of Bernard Phelan to one of the daughters of Daniel Guestier, a well-known merchant in the market. With the benefit of his father-inlaw's experience, he was able to sum thinking about making his own wines, in order to do this, he acquired Ie Clos dc Caramey. located in Saint-Esiephe, in 1805. followed in 1810 by the Segur de Cabanac estate to complement his first acquisition. A sleeper of the vintage, the 2008 is the finest Phelan-Segur since the 1990. It possesses a dense ruby/purple color as well as loads of blueberry and cassis fruit intertwined with hints of charcoal and that unmistakable floral note that appears in m... 51% Cabernet Sauvignon 47% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Planted on a mound of gravel the vines are an average age of almost 35 years. Showing lots of cassis and concentrated blueberry aromas on the nose. This had a certain heft to the palate weightier than the other 2008s from this AOC but it still finishes with a fair amount of new oak and medium grained tannins. Although a bit rough at first the 2008 Phelan-Segur evolves to demonstrate that it is a very modern St. Estephe. I think this still needs a year or two to come together and then I d drink from 2013-2010. Cory Gowan.
