It wasn't mere chance that led Bernard Phelan, a young Irish wine broker, to leave his homeland at the end of the 18th century and settle in Bordeaux. At that time, the city was a major trading centre with the British Isles. The families that did business together, buying and selling the wines produced in the region, formed close tics. These relationships sometimes led to marriages, and notably that of Bernard Phelan to one of the daughters of Daniel Guestier, a well-known merchant in the market. With the benefit of his father-inlaw's experience, he was able to sum thinking about making his own wines, in order to do this, he acquired Ie Clos dc Caramey. located in Saint-Esiephe, in 1805. followed in 1810 by the Segur de Cabanac estate to complement his first acquisition. Very oaky, smoky, dried tomato, menthol, licorice, a touch pruny with cocoa notes – sweet, really sweet like pastry glaze, soft and weighty in the mouth, has plenty of rich fruit but too much extracted, dry tannin too, lots of depth to the honey and cocoa tinged dark fruit but those tannins clamp down quickly on the short finish (87-88)

Herbaceous and vegetal on the nose with an underlying woody sweetness – indistinct in the mouth with nice richness but not much focus, acid is acceptable, tannins really build up, sort of just lays across the palate, (81-82)

Nice and vivid color. The nose is fruity discreet and of ripe fruit type. Smooth finely pulpy and very fruity on the palate it finishes tasty on lovely tannins and medium length. No rusticity whatsoever and that's the news Michel Rolland acts as consultant since 2006. A success of the vintage. Jean-Marc Quarin - www.quarin.com
