Chateau Petrus Pomerol 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

Parker review: "Fleshy, fat, and already sexy, the dark plum/purple-tinged 2003 Petrus is
exceptionally ripe and rich. While not as exotic as its rival, Lafleur, it is
rich, heady, and loaded. A tour de force in winemaking for Pomerol, it
vindicates Christian Moueix?s decision to harvest nearly all his Merlot on
September 3 and 4, and the Cabernet Franc on September 17. However, production
is tiny ... less than 1,700 cases. Full-bodied, powerful, and exceptionally
pure without losing its nobility and elegance, this stunning Petrus can be
drunk in 2-3 years or cellared for three decades."

95/100 pts. Château Petrus is one of the world’s most distinguished and prized wines. The winery is located in the eastern portion of Pomerol in the Bordeaux region of France. While Pomerol has never been granted “growth” classification status, Petrus is widely considered on par with other First Growth wines. It may be hard to fathom, but for the first couple of centuries of its existence, Petrus was a cheap, hard sell. The estate was under the management of the Arnaud family until 1925, when hotel owner Madame Edmond Loubat acquired sole ownership of the property. With consultation from negociant Jean-Pierre Moueix, they reinvented the entire winemaking process on the tiny 12 hectare vineyard to a precise science and raised the price of the wine to signify its value. Soon demand outweighed supply and one of the world’s first cult wines was born. Today it has a prominent place on the wine lists of the world’s top restaurants and fetches stratospheric numbers at auction houses, especially with older vintages. With the passing of Madame Loubat in 1961, the entire estate was passed on to Mouiex. His sons Jean-Francois and Christian took over the production and all marketing aspects of the wine. In 2008, Olivier Berrouet, son of Petrus technical director Jean-Claude Berrouet, became principal winemaker. The vineyard’s location in the highest point of Pomerol is made up of iron-rich clay soil, resulting in fruit with excellent mineral balance and aging potential. Petrus was one of the first vineyards to implement green-harvesting techniques, which keeps yields low and quality high. Before 1960, the wines were a blend of Merlot with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc. Since that time, the wine is now 100% Merlot, with two years’ aging in new oak barrels. Only 2,500 cases are produced in each vintage. Read less

OK, after reading all the reviews and uncorking a bottle myself, I expected an exotic bouquet of berry, chocolate, and flowers. Instead, what entered my quivering nostrils was a smell of sweat, mothballs, and sewage. What's even worse is that this taste lingered for hours, just like garlic. Needless to say I was shocked and disappointed. Maybe, 2003 was a bad year?

Extraordinary nose of berry, chocolate and flowers. Amazing, jaw-dropping quality. Full-bodied, with supersilky, seductive tannins and a finish that lasts for minutes. Out of this world. Best after 2014. 2,000 cases made. -JS Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2003 Petrus 750ml

Deep, healthy red-ruby color. Multidimensional aromas of mulberry, plum, smoked meat, leather and mocha are at once vibrant and slightly wild. Then sweet, densely packed and powerful, and showing little or no sign of the excesses of the vintage. This... Stephen Tanzer. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2003 Petrus 750ml
