Château Petrus is one of the world’s most distinguished and prized wines. The winery is located in the eastern portion of Pomerol in the Bordeaux region of France. While Pomerol has never been granted “growth” classification status, Petrus is widely considered on par with other First Growth wines.    It may be hard to fathom, but for the first couple of centuries of its existence, Petrus was a cheap, hard sell. The estate was under the management of the Arnaud family until 1925, when hotel owner Madame Edmond Loubat acquired sole ownership of the property. With consultation from negociant Jean-Pierre Moueix, they reinvented the entire winemaking process on the tiny 12 hectare vineyard to a precise science and raised the price of the wine to signify its value. Soon demand outweighed supply and one of the world’s first cult wines was born. Today it has a prominent place on the wine lists of the world’s top restaurants and fetches stratospheric numbers at auction houses, especially with older vintages.    With the passing of Madame Loubat in 1961, the entire estate was passed on to Mouiex. His sons Jean-Francois and Christian took over the production and all marketing aspects of the wine. In 2008, Olivier Berrouet, son of Petrus technical director Jean-Claude Berrouet, became principal winemaker.    The vineyard’s location in the highest point of Pomerol is made up of iron-rich clay soil, resulting in fruit with excellent mineral balance and aging potential. Petrus was one of the first vineyards to implement green-harvesting techniques, which keeps yields low and quality high. Before 1960, the wines were a blend of Merlot with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc. Since that time, the wine is now 100% Merlot, with two years’ aging in new oak barrels. Only 2,500 cases are produced in each vintage.  Read less

In this vintage that produced so many lightweight wines, only the stablemate of Petrus, Trotanoy, can compete with the great Petrus. Fully mature, with good dark ruby color and minimal browning, this chunky, fleshy, warm, and generous wine has plenty of ripe Merlot fruit, a viscous, weighty texture, and fast-fading tannin. A lovely Petrus, it is best drunk over the next decade. I recently drank a bottle of this wine with my wife to celebrate my 50th birthday, and it remains a beautiful, savory, complex, intense wine with a seamless texture. Last tasted, 7/97 (from a magnum).

...Nevertheless, this has always been the best wine of the vintage and a gorgeous example of Petrus. The wine shows considerable amber to its garnet color and has a sweet nose of coffee beans intermixed with cedar, herbs, black cherries, roasted nuts... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
