Here we find classic aged Graves from a great vintage with deep notes of curing tobacco, huge dried herb notes, sweet black spices smoking in a saute pan, a dark core of cassis fruit and bright notes of tarragon and Savory, Lean and feathering in the mouth with a lovely resolved character that is elegant and refined though a bit faded and even bony on the backend though there is a fine core of iron/gravel rich dark fruit on the mid-palate with notes of savory bouillon adding depth and deep notes of damp cigar lingering on the long finish which has a bit of tannin emerging on the everso lightly astringent finale. A wonderful bottle of mature bordeaux 93pts

Winemaker's Notes:

92 points Robert Parker: The 1961 is extremely rich and full bodied, with an opulent, almost roasted chestnut fruitiness, layer upon layer of richness, and a long, silky, heady finish. This is almost the essence of the mineral, tobacco, Graves-like style that most people associate with Haut-Brion. The wine is fully mature, and seems to fade after 30 minutes in the glass - a sure sign that imminent consumption is required. Last tasted 6/97. (Jan 1998)
