Château Palmer Margaux Bottle 1996

Winemaker's Notes:

Berry Bros & Rudd review: The sensuous, generous dollop of 40 % Merlot that went into this I think is what makes this so exquisite and beguiling. Warm, sweet red fruit with a hint of vanilla leading you to a palate which is plump and fleshy but elegant and sophisticated. It really reminds of a top Grand Cru Burgundy from a great year with its purity and grace. Please dont be put off if you read words like "elegant" to mean thin and lacking flavour as it can often mean in wine terms. Quite the contrary here, this is jam packed full of oomph and the finish is 3 to 4 minutes long. If its a small Christmas Day or New Years Eve gathering this year for you ( or you are an incredibly generous host/hostess and having the hordes in!) and you want something that will tick all the boxes ( and some boxes you hadnt even known you had) you wont be disappointed and you will certainly have a very happy C

A grand cru is a matter of origin in time as in space. The Château Palmer style is embedded in history and dedicated to the expression of its terroir. It is a style beyond fashion and trends. To experience its timelessness, there is no better way than to taste it. Again and again. Finesse and elegance, typical of the great wines of Margaux, are the permanent trademarks of Château Palmer, characterized by the softness and refinement of silk, the warmth of velvet, and the leather of noblesse. The unusual combination of grape varieties – as much Merlot as Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Petit Verdot – gives Château Palmer a bouquet of extraordinary complexity, with fruit, flowers, and spice wrapped in a fleshy and generous structure. The subtle balance between aromatic richness and powerful yet always restrained tannins makes Palmer a wine of incomparable charm, even when very young. Its length leaves the persistent memory of a heady mix of sensations and emotions. Long barrel ageing is essential for Château Palmer to give full expression to its gravely soil and reveal all its body and flesh. This ageing continues very slowly for many years and even decades in the bottle. Your patience will be generously rewarded when you taste an old vintage. It exudes a particularly rich and complex aromatic finish, sometimes exotic, always unforgettable. Wine tasting is a meeting of two living bodies as they surrender to each other, the human being and the wine. Tasters always have expectations from the wine they choose: good wines meet them; Château Palmer exceeds them. Read less

Very nice margaux. I am glad they poured the 1996 at the Wine Spectator Grand Tour. It seemed to be the right time. This was 40% merlot, 55% cab and the balance was cab franc and petit verdot.

Fruity, hint of acidity, needs time to open up, but worth it

Full ruby-red. Lower-toned aromas of boysenberry, mulberry, plum, tobacco, star anise and roasted oak. Vinous and rather tough in the mouth, with strong acid spine. This was harder to view than most 96s on my recent tour. Finishes with rather tough ... Stephen Tanzers IWC. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1996 Chateau Palmer 750ml
