Described by the Chateau as its second wine, the back label says that Cuvée Rouge is “made according to the philosophy of Chateau Musar,” an intriguing directive. It’s extremely rare in the UK. Again, it’s not on the Musar website (although there is a wine called Cuvée Musar). And despite its age, this “entry level” Musar experience (as Stuart described it) is only £7.95, just the thing for the Sediment blog. Sediment likes the idea of “entry level”. It suggests you’re at the same concert, just with a restricted view. But sadly here, it’s not so much a restricted view as a restricted orchestra. With a paler colour, and no legs to speak of, Cuvée Rouge is a pallid version of Musar; yes, it has that burnt, almost medicinal nose, but it’s low on fruit and doesn’t have a lasting finish. Created in 1930 in the cellar of an old 17th century castle, Château Musar is as much the work of a family as the living testimony of all the civilisations that have tread its soil. After a long stay in France, Gaston Hochar returned to Lebanon and created Château Musar in the cellars of the old 'Mzar' castle in Ghazir, overlooking the Mediterranean sea. What began as a hobby soon became a passion; a passion inspired by an initial encounter with renowned viticulturist Ronald Barton while he was stationed in Lebanon during the Second World War. The family's love for wine grew and in 1959, after completing his oenology diploma in Bordeaux, the eldest son, Serge, entered the business. Some call him the magician, the man behind this extraordinary wine. His response is that he only seeks is to translate what nature intended. the color of the wine is transparent and shinny, the nose lacks personality and is very different from the typical complex Musar nose. the pallet is thin revealing a majority of immature cinsault partially extracted. the syrah and cabernet appear on the back label but are very shy in the glass. all in all disapointing no real kick beside the acidity away from Musar personality.

Light ruby clear, the nose reveals underwood hints, the texture is light with fruitiness, the tannins are nicely integrated, nice, smooth with no edge.
