Deep Red. The nose was distinctly brettanomyces all but drowning the dark berry aroma. The nose did not develop at all over a 3 hour period. On the palate the wine was simple and exhibited little secondary character - perhaps at best some cedar. Tannins were dusty and generally what you expect of a wine of this age. This wine was a very big disapointment. (Served blind with 5 winemakers, all in agreement).

The beautiful 1999 Mouton Rothschild may be a modern day clone of their 1962 or 1985. Its saturated ruby/purple color is followed by sumptuous aromas of cedar wood, creme de cassis, wood smoke, coffee, and dried herbs. The wine is forward, lush, and full-bodied. It is already complex as well as succulent, fleshy, and long. Tannin in the finish suggests more nuances will emerge in 4-5 years. It is a complex, classic Mouton. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030.

Blackberry and spice aromas follow through to a medium- to full-bodied palate, with fine tannins and roasted, almost exotic fruit character on the finish. Lovely Mouton... Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1999 Mouton-Rothschild 750ml

Delivers sweet tobacco and plum aromas, with a lovely richness. Full-bodied, featuring lots of cedar, tobacco, chocolate and berry character. Long and silky in the palate. There is no sense in waiting; this is so delicious now.-89/99 Bordeaux blind... Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1999 Mouton-Rothschild 1500ml

Winemaker's Notes:

Berry Bros & Rudd review: The nose of this 2009 Ch. Mouton-Rothschild is brimming with exotic fruit notes, followed by cassis fruits and hints of tobacco. Ripe tannins provide the structure and knit exceptionally well with the rich generous fruit. It is already drinking well, but it has the legs for ageing if desired.
