What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Winemakers Notes

Very deep colour with an engaging blackcurrant, vanilla scented nose with strong hints of freshly ground coffee. Concentrated, fat, and voluptuous on the palate with sweet ripe apple characterics. A legendary wine.

Reviews

In May 2007 I was lucky enough to try this wine.
Alongside an allstar cast of 1982's including Leoville Les Cases, Chateau Margaux and Ducru Beaucaillou.
The Mouton was easily the most youthful wine in the lineup. Blackcurrant to the fore, touch of graphite and gently framed with spices and fine oak.
A wine with tremendous energy and one that should drink for many, many years to come. As perfect as a bottle can be!
(n.b- The Les Cases stole the tasting however!!)

Rating: 97/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 103, July/August 2002 ($625-$795) Saturated dark red. Pure, subtle, highly aromatic nose of currant, cedar, eucalyptus and exotic oak. Wonderfully silky and opulent, with utterly compelling inner-mouth perfume and chewy depth. Showing spectacularly today and hiding its rock-solid underlying structure. The great finish shows extraordinary aromatic complexity and subtlety, along with big, dusty, fine tannins. This wine is a no-brainer: a clear knockout now and capable of going on for another two or three decades.

At the Philadelphia tasting, it was impossibly impenetrable and closed, although phenomenally dense and muscular. However, on two other recent occasions, I decanted the wine in the morning and consumed it that evening and again the following evening. It is immune to oxidation! Moreover, it has a level of concentration that represents the essence of the Mouton terroir as well as the high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon it contains.
