Chateau Mouton Rothschild Pauillac 2005

RP: The 2005 Mouton Rothschild will have to take a back seat to the prodigious 2006, but administrator Philippe Dalhuin deserves considerable credit for pushing Mouton to higher quality levels over recent years. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest mostly Merlot, the dark purple-hued 2005 exhibits a restrained but promising nose of cedar, tobacco leaf, creme de cassis, and toasty oak. Full-bodied, tannic, and extremely backward, with the vintage�s tell-tale acidity, it appears to be even more closed in the bottle than it was from barrel. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc. Dark purple all the way to the edge. Great spicy clove nose over cherry, new oak, and cardamom. (60% cabernet sauvignon, 20% cabernet franc and 20% merlot) Ruby-red. Pungent aromas of currant, lead pencil, minerals and flowers. Juicy, floral and precise, with a penetrating flavor of blackcurrant. In a leaner style but with lovely sweetness of fruit and some incipient complexity suggesting that this will be drinkable within four or five years. Very good for this second wine. -International Wine Cellar 87-90 Licorice, mineral and currant aromas follow through to a medium-to-full body, with fine tannins and a mineral and currant aftertaste. WA 91 (4/2008): Perhaps the finest white wine yet produced by Mouton Rothschild, this 2005 offers lovely notes of honeysuckle, tropical fruits, crushed rocks, and subtle wood. It is a delicious generic Bordeaux to consume over the next 4-5 years.

A superb Mouton, the 2005 is composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and a dollop of Cabernet Franc. Under the new administrator, Philippe Dalhuin, the strictest selection of any recent vintage was instituted (64% of the production was used), and the 2005's 13.5% natural alcohol is one of the highest ever achieved at this estate. While not as good as the 1986 or 1982, the 2005 is a brilliant wine offering a classic inky/blue/purple color along with notions of creme de cassis, licorice, and sweet oak. Full-bodied, powerful, and exceptionally pure with good underlying acidity as read more...well as a boatload of tannin, it will approach full maturity between 2015-2020, and should keep for 40 years. Berry Bros & Rudd review: This is truly a masterpiece. A majestic, complex, rich, intoxicating nose withexciting, racy,pure cassis notes leads on to a sublime, multi, multi-layeredpalate with a precise, cool, silky core of the ripest blackcurrants with agenerous dollop of double cream.This really is a spectacular, flawless winethat not only rivals the other 2005 First Growths but surpasses 2 or 3 of them.Whether this is as great as the 1928 or 1945 is just too soon to call, but thiswill definitely be one of the greatest cases you might ever have in yourcellar. Awe-inspiring!
