What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Reviews

The wine has a deep and brilliant garnet red colour. With great elegance, the nose displays aromas of fresh, ripe red berry fruit (cherry and raspberry) then opens out on blackcurrant. Supple and round on the attack, it fills out on the palate, striking a fine balance between blackberry and bilberry fruit and leaving an impression of lush fullness. The lingering and harmonious finish, sustained by well-rounded tannins, suggests that the wine will age well. Distinguished by a typical Merlot elegance and roundness, Mouton Cadet rouge 2002 is a perfect symbol of its resurgence.

Rating: 17/20 - As reviewed by Jancis Robinson Quite evolved nose. Very voluptuous nose - whoever made this deserves a medal. Real interest and life and savour - this wine sparkles with life. Well balanced and with layers. Very satisfying expression without oodles of alcohol. Just what bordeaux is all about.

Rating: 94/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 120, May/June 2005 ($130-$180) Good saturated ruby-red. Tight nose hints at currant and smoky oak. Highly concentrated, densely packed and built to age. As young as it is, it also shows a lovely velvety texture rare for this vintage. Finishes with terrific breadth, subtle minerality and noble tannins. I've been a fan of this wine since the outset.

Classic nose of tobacco, tar, cassis, lead pencil and some spicy oak. Incredible amount of red fruits on the palate with huge structure and great defintion on the midpalate that extended to the finish. Long finish. Lots of stuff to chew on here. This has really fleshed out and gained weight since I tasted it out of barrel. Classic.

Rating: 5/5 - As reviewed by Decanter Huge colour, really wonderful smooth, velvety depth, a thoroughly hedonistic nose, voluptuous and seductive fruit, shows excellent ripeness and opulence, but with ripe tannins for balance. Drink 2008-25. (Tasted en primeur)
