Chateau Montelena Potter Valley Riesling 2016

Member Review by vin0vin0:

Absolutely fantastic California riesling. Fresh tropical fruit, slight petrol, great balance, only slightly sweet but very delicious. This went great with our spicy asian meal. Great QPR!

Chateau Montelena's rich history began on a chilly fall morning when Alfred L. Tubbs spaded over and inspected the soil where he thought of planting estate vineyards. He'd heard the Napa Valley was the best place to grow grapes in California. A deal was struck and in January of 1882 the San Francisco entrepreneur owned 254 acres of rugged land just two miles north of Calistoga at the base of Mount Saint Helena. The soils are well drained, stony and loose – perfect for the vine cuttings he would plant. It took less than a decade to turn his dream into reality. First Tubbs planted his vineyards, then he built his Chateau, and in 1886 he imported a French-born winemaker. By 1896 his winery, christened Chateau Montelena (a contracted form of Mount Saint Helena), was the seventh largest in the Napa Valley. The next chapter began with the renaissance of Chateau Montelena Winery and the Estate vineyard. Under the leadership of Jim Barrett, the vineyard was cleared and replanted, and the Chateau outfitted with modern winemaking equipment. He assembled a team to oversee the vineyard and winemaking, then grew and contracted for the highest-quality grapes in the Napa Valley. In 1972 wines were made for the first time. Decades later, this celebrated family-owned winery continues to thrive with Jim Barrett at the helm. The Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Montelena Estate Zinfandel are grown in one of the world's most unique winegrowing properties. The Estate vineyard is comprised of varied terrain, from flat to steep hillsides. The vineyard gently slopes downward towards its base, where a small patch of sedimentary soil was deposited by the settling of an ancient ocean or lake. Read less

Solid effort and great value. Nose has some petroleum and apricot with a tart, fresh taste with layers of lime. Good acid and decent finish. Tasted at Pres Club in SF. Was room temperature ... think would have been better if chilled a bit.

Nose: Aromas of lemon blossom, honeysuckle and rose petals are immediately apparent with a quick swirl of the glass. They’re followed by ripe strawberry, fresh-cut melon, and cinnamon. Palate: On the palate, the wine evolves slowly but beautifully. The lively acidity is juicy and mouth-coating; gradually giving way to apricots, pineapple, and lemon candy. There’s a subtle spiciness that carries through the midpalate and balances the viscosity and texture – all hallmarks of the 2014 vintage. Finish: The finish is rich and refreshing, lingering past lemon meringue and kaffir lime.

Pale gold in color, this Riesling opens with floral aromas of honeysuckle and candied orange, layered with pear, spicy honey, and rich Charentais melon. The palate shows a nice smooth entry; full and round, but not heavy, with good crisp acidity. Flavors of lemon zest and tart mandarins lead the way and are followed by light stone fruits, honey, and poached pear - all rounded off with a warm, subtle, spicy finish. As with all of Montelenas offerings, this is a food wine, and should pair quite nicely with seared scallops (among other things). - Winery

Bright golden straw color in the glass, this wonderfully aromatic wine shows layers of floral notes - orange blossom and honeysuckle, along with ripe orange, lime, apricot, and white melon fruits, all accented with sweet clove and nutmeg spice tones. Soft, round and fleshy on the palate, this wine shows a strong acid backbone without pronounced tartness. Rich, smooth, and juicy with nice density throughout, there are layers of white peach, apricot, white melon, and Rangpur lime leading into the long, warm and spicy finish. - Winery ** Only 1 in Stock **
