What to Expect

California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain for example, tend to be a little leaner with more obvious structural elements.

Winemakers Notes

Notes on the Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2004 : WINE ADVOCATE REVIEW: 89 POINTS The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa exhibits peat moss, black currant, cedar, and earth characteristics in its elegant personality. With sweet fruit, an opulent mid-palate, and admirable purity as well as length, it is a supple Cabernet to enjoy during its first decade of life. Reviews

These are monumental wines from an historic winery. Chateau Montelena is the winery that won over the judges of the Paris Tasting in 1976. Their Cabernet Sauvignon is pure fruit goodness. Cassis, plum, and black cherry notes, with underlying thyme and coffee bean surround a structured core.

"... dense, ruby/purple-tinged wine with full body, and... plenty of structure. Like nearly every vintage of their top Cabernet Sauvignon, it will last for 25 or more years. The wine has sweet tannin in a broad, flavorful, concentrated style with plenty of black currant, licorice, and spice...beautifully textured, slightly more forward than most Montelena Cabernets tend to be. It is another beauty...94+" WA 12/07.

Rating: 89/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 126, May/June 2006 (85% cabernet sauvignon) Good ruby-red. Rich aromas of black cherry and menthol. Sweet, dense and lush for this bottling, with black cherry and cassis flavors. Much finer-grained than the 2003 bottling. Finishes with sweet tannins. The production was 8,500 cases in 2004, down from a normal 12,000.

The Montelena earthy-berry aroma is very concentrated, showing lovely, classic Cabernet, warm earth and sun baked cassis with licorice and spice. On the palate there is integration of strong, deep, concentrated fruit in a perfect balance. Super fine tannin grips the palate, with ripe, round flavors that dance right on the seam between classic Bordeaux and California styles.
