Food Pairings for Chateau Montelena Chardonnay Napa Valley
Very surprised by this wine. After reading a lot of neutral and some negative press about Chateau Montelena I didn't expect much. This wine was quite good. It had very good balance with a long finish, fine tannins and decent acidity. It was very expressive wine and not one that meets 'classical' definitions.
A beautiful classic Bordeaux style cab from Napa Valley. This is not a museum piece, but a very drinkable, food-friendly wine to enjoy. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this. Great restrained style with good fruit and balance.
Opens up with good dark blackberry fruit and a bit of spice and ripe black cherry. Has a fresh, spiced palate with bunches of blackberries, medium to high acid, medium tannin, with clove, chocolate and molasses mingling on the finish.
scents of bubble gum, lemon, and hay has a dry start tart lemon flavor an intense, puckery finish
Rich red, pretty and feminine style fruit on the nose. Sweet red berries fill the aromas in addition to nice floral notes. Fruit forward in style as age has relaxed the tannin and acid a bit. Luscious and rich, dominated by red fruit. Raspberry, currant and cherry flavors with nice vanilla influence. Soft, rounded tannins. It's in a lovely drinking window right now. 93 pts. 5/9/13
Tasted at the winery 9/20/09.
86% cabernet sauv with touches of merlot and cab franc. Delicious, luscious and decadent wine. -Tasted at the winery 9/290/09
External Reviews for Chateau Montelena Chardonnay Napa Valley
This California Cab serves up lots of ripe, supple black cherry, currant and plum-laced flavors, as well as pretty touches of earth, anise and mineral. Turns smooth and supple, finishing with polished tannins. Best from 2001 through 2015.
While it will not be released until 2002, the 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate exhibits an opaque, thick black/purple color, spectacular concentration, a multilayered mid-palate, the seamlessness of a great vintage, and a rich, jammy, concentrated finish. The powerful, gorgeously pure black fruits and unctuous texture suggest it will drink well young, yet be capable of 2-3 decades of effortless evolution.
Full-bodied, but closed, with gorgeously pure black fruits, powerful, loamy, earthy scents along with fruit and extract, this wine also needs 5-6 years of cellaring, and should easily last through the first 2-3 decades of the new century. Stern, tannic and concentrated.
This is another winery where the 1995 may be as strong as the 1994. The color is an opaque purple. The wine is full-bodied and powerful, with classic notes of cassis intermixed with loamy soil scents, underbrush and spice. There is massive body and elevated, but sweet tannins that is well-integrated with the wine's other components, a blockbuster mid-palate, and a finish that lasts for 30+ seconds. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2025.
Very saturated deep ruby color. Vibrant aromas of black cherry, redcurrant, tobacco and tar; has great snap and freshness. Silky-sweet and velvety in the mouth but with terrific vinosity. Given shape by a firm tannin spice, yet somehow seamless. An explosion of red berries in the mouth and on the aftertaste. Finishes with great sweetness and thoroughly suave tannins. A brilliant showing for this wine. Barrett says the '97 promises to have the same size as the '91.
This '95 is one of the most supple and forward Château Montelena Cabernets in years. Ripe, fleshy, with complex currant, herb, tobacco, cedar and mineral flavors, it's not dense or chewy but very well balanced. Should be an earlier-than-usual drinker; best from 2002 through 2010.
The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (13,000 cases) will disprove all the naysayers about how bad the vintage was in the North Coast. It possesses an opaque ruby/purple color, a gorgeous perfume of loamy soil, new saddle leather, chocolate, and black cherry and black currant fruit, full body, and ripe tannin in the finish. As it sits in the glass, notes of cedar and spice box also emerge. Although more evolved than most Montelena Cabernets are at age 4, there is no doubting that it will still provide considerable pleasure at age 15 or 16. Kudos to the Barretts for producing this impressive 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the vintage's few stars.
"The flavors follow, leading with classic Napa ValleyChardonnay varietal character and showing strong Bartlett pear. Thepalate is one of fresh, huge fruit - lovely, luscious, andmouthwatering. This Chardonnay is built to age, and I fully expect thatafter a couple of years of proper cellaring its many layers ofunderlying structure will begin to emerge. So as tasty as this wine isnow, by then it will really be rocking!" Winery Notes
