External Reviews for Chateau Montelena Chardonnay Napa Valley
A classic Napa Valley Cabernet, the rsquo;96 Montelena makes a succinct and supple statement, then expands on it to juicy and delicious depths. The aroma is bright and clean, balancing scents of black currants and lead pencil. Then it builds on the palate with a powerful intensity, a full-bore ripeness without excess weight. In fact, therersquo;s nothing extraneous, nothing to get in the way of the beauty of the wine itself, round as a dark plum, juicy as a currant. The elegant expression lasts on the palate; long after swallowing, the juiciness keeps emerging out if the tannin. More of the wine will emerge as it ages, though it is already a satisfying match for a juicy veal chop.
Full-bodied, but closed, with gorgeously pure black fruits, powerful, loamy, earthy scents along with fruit and extract, this wine also needs 5ndash;6 years of cellaring, and should easily last through the first 2ndash;3 decades of the new century. Stern, tannic and concentrated.
This rsquo;95 is one of the most supple and forward Chacirc;teau Montelena Cabernets in years. Ripe, fleshy, with complex currant, herb, tobacco, cedar and mineral flavors, itrsquo;s not dense or chewy but very well balanced. Should be an earlier-than-usual drinker; best from 2002 through 2010.
While it will not be released until 2002, the 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate exhibits an opaque, thick black/purple color, spectacular concentration, a multilayered mid-palate, the seamlessness of a great vintage, and a rich, jammy, concentrated finish. The powerful, gorgeously pure black fruits and unctuous texture suggest it will drink well young, yet be capable of 2ndash;3 decades of effortless evolution.
This is another winery where the 1995 may be as strong as the 1994. The color is an opaque purple. The wine is full-bodied and powerful, with classic notes of cassis intermixed with loamy soil scents, underbrush and spice. There is massive body and elevated, but sweet tannins that is well-integrated with the winersquo;s other components, a blockbuster mid-palate, and a finish that lasts for 30+ seconds. Anticipated maturity: 2000ndash;2025.
The 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (an 8,600-case cuvee made from yields of 1.98 tons of fruit per acre) is considered by Bo Barrett to be a ldquo;greatrdquo; year. The wine boasts a saturated inky/purple color as well as extraordinary density of fruit and cassis, and huge tannin, body, and extract. It is a substantial, palate-staining, long, muscular Cabernet that should only be purchased by connoisseurs with cold cellars as well as patience. Anticipated maturity: 2006ndash;2030.
The dense purple-colored 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc) reveals a sweet perfume of black currants, an expansive, full-bodied palate, surprising elegance as well as accessibility, excellent purity, and a long, layered finish. It is a successful 2000 Cabernet to drink now and over the next 12ndash;15 years.
The medium to full-bodied, fresh 2000 Chardonnay's aromatic profile includes scents of nectarines, apple skins, ripe pears, and lemon butter with notions of oak in the background (15% new wood is utilized). It is long in the mouth, lively, and vibrant.Robert Parker's Wine Advocate*Rare magnum format*
