tasting in July 2012. boquet and mouthfeel are both moderate, almost understated for a syrah with garnache. the power and dark fruit flavor of the varietal does come through gradually as it reaches the back of the palate, and lingers long after the glass is finished. i had a glass on its own, and am looking forward to having a bit of steak with the next glass. i'd say a 90 rating is about right.

[Blind Syrah tasting] Odd spiciness. Medium body. Light corniness.

Mingling intensely resinous evocations of scrubby garrigue with confitured black fruits, the Maris 2009 Syrah La Touge — a cuvee from less-favored Syrah sites and featuring 12–15% Grenache — displays ample body; a rich texture; and a generous as well as invigoratingly pungent finish, though not the infectious juiciness and saliva-inducing savor of its 2008 counterpart. I expect this will be best enjoyed over the next couple of years.

This firm, savory red displays good definition to the dried berry, cherry and spice flavors. The supple finish has ferrous and brickish notes. Drink now.
