A tight and silky red, with lots to offer - currant, tobacco and cherry character, medium to full body, fine tannins and a long, long finish. Just needs time. Best after 2006.
Bright full ruby. Pure, perfumed aromas of cassis and violet. Dense and tactile in the mouth; a huge, chewy wine with major extract but also considerable refinement. Almost painfully backward today, and a bit less perfumed than is was in the year or so after the bottling, but the huge tannins show no hardness. Another great expression of Cabernet Sauvignon from the '96 vintage. Drink 2015 through 2040.
The 1997 Château Margaux is an immensely charming, open-knit, beautifully made wine offering soft, lush blackberry/cassis fruit intermixed with toasty oak. The wine exhibits excellent concentration, a seductive personality, and an easy-going, round, expansive finish. It should be drinkable after bottling in June, and last for 15 or more years. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2015.
All in finesse, with berry, currant and light vanilla character. Medium- to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a fresh finish. Lovely, long finish. Gorgeous core of fruit in this wine. Drink now through 2004.
The sexy, dark plum/purple-colored 1999 Margaux is already revealing complex aromatics. This surprisingly charming and round offering is reminiscent of a vintage such as 1985. Although neither a blockbuster nor a heavyweight, it grows in the mouth revealing tremendous length as well as purity. Administrator Paul Pontallier prefers it to the more austere 1998, as do I. This is an archetypical Château Margaux of richness, finesse, balance, and symmetry. It can be drunk young, but promises to age nicely for two decades. Extrapolating backwards, it would probably have something in common with the underrated 1962 Médocs.
The 1988 has evolved nicely since I tasted it last year. It has a classic bouquet of violets and blackcurrants intertwined with the vanillin scents of new oak. Medium-bodied, concentrated, but tannic, this elegantly wrought wine should out-live the 1989, but will it ever provide as much pleasure? Anticipated maturity: 1996-2015.
(Barrel tasting) Lovely perfumes of blackberries, cherries, minerals and light toasted oak. Full-bodied, with super well-integrated tannins and a long, long caressing finish. A big, silky, sexy red. It has the potential to be 100 points. Fantastic. Margaux has such power, yet it's refined and elegant. Still not in bottle in early December.
Undoubtedly the most exciting wine of the vintage, Paul Pontallier's never-ending pursuit of excellence has meant that through careful selection and attention to detail, Chateau Margaux has produced a wine that will stand alongside the very best in a great year. Harmonious, rich, balanced and concentrated with a lovely sophisticated feel.
