Bright ruby-red. Boysenberry, minerals, espresso and sexy oak on the nose. Wonderfully concentrated flavors of berries and espresso, with perfect integration of the new oak. But a bit youthfully rigid today owing to its penetrating acids. This impressively dense wine from a very cool summer has filled in nicely during its elevage but will require a good 10 or 12 years for its firm acids and tight tannins to soften. Very long and subtle on the aftertaste.

This is beautiful on the nose with currants, berries and flowers. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and pretty fruit. Needs a bit more fruit on the midpalate to be a classic Margaux, but clearly outstanding. Best after 2007.

An absolute classic; incredibly concentrated, complex, elegant and firm without a hint of hardness. Layers of blackberry, cassis, plum, cedar, vanilla and spice, yet there is also a sense of reserve, indicating this has plenty of room to grow. Best from 1995 through 2000.

If a wine can ever be perfect, this is as perfect as a wine can get. Right from the beginning this was the wine of the vintage, and nothing has changed. Margaux was the last of the first growths to be bottled because it just needed that extra time in barrel. The wine now has huge, intense black cherry and blackberry fruits, and marvelous tannins that are sweet and powerful. To finish, the magnificent Margaux perfume of sandalwood and ripe fruit dominates, leaving an impression of finesse and power.

All in finesse, with berry, currant and light vanilla character. Medium- to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a fresh finish. Lovely, long finish. Gorgeous core of fruit in this wine. Drink now through 2004.

Ultraconcentrated, with layers and layers of fruit and superfine tannins. Plenty of fruit, mineral and meat character. Full-bodied yet refined and classy, it coats your palate with gorgeous fruit and ripe tannins. Truly superb. One of the wines of the vintage. Best after 2012.

Black color. Minty, with loads of violet and berry character and hints of spice. Full-bodied, racy and fine, with silky tannins and a long finish. One of the top wines of the vintage. Give it some time, but who can wait?
