What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Winemakers Notes

1995 is a true great vintage with all the hallmark characteristics: power, depth, richness, complexity, subtlety and harmony. Today, the nose is not really closed but is still holding back a lot: all the aromas are most definitely there, but they are hiding a little in the shadows. On the plate, it is obviously the wine’s power which comes to the fore; the tannic structure is dense, tight-knit and firm, without being hard. A few more years of cellaring are required before beginning to drink this superb wine, whose balance guarantees a harmonious development in bottle. (December 2006)

"Black in color, delivering extraordinary aromas of blackberry, raisin, spices and fresh mushroom. Full bodied, with an amazing core of ripe fruit, yet ulta-balanced and finely textured. Touches every taste bud. This incredible young red spent two years in new wood, but you can't tell. It's all glorious fruit. A legendary wine. Best after 2017...100" -WS 3/08

Cabernet Sauvignon, with an alcohol content of 13 degrees or less, makes up 85% of the grand vin. The Merlot (8% of the total) was the only lot not attaining 14 degrees! The chateau believes the 2005's concentration is superior to 2000 and 2003, and might possibly be compared to other years with very dry summers like 1928 and 1947... in any case,'a truly great, pure vintage' in their words. The color is a beautiful, graduated purple mulberry. Fabulously pure, subtly scented and complex in the aroma with a graceful, reserved palate. Finishing with very firm, defining tannin, the read more...

"Unbelievable nose already. Incredible complexity of aromas, from wild raspberries to flowers and fresh mushrooms. Violets, currants. Love it. Full-bodied, with ultrarefined tannins. Long, long finish. It lasts for minutes on the palate. A wine with classic beauty. May well be 100 points...95-100" WS 03/06
