Château Lynch-Bages was owned by the Lynch family for three quarters of a century. They descended from John Lynch, a young Irishman from Galway who was chased out of his country in 1691. In the 18th century, Count Jean-Baptiste Lynch, mayor of Bordeaux, inherited the estate and handed over management to his brother Michel Lynch, who was also mayor of Pauillac during the French Revolution. Jean-Charles Cazes, highly respected in the Médoc for his experience in viticul- ture and winemaking, bought the property in 1934. With his son André, he devoted all his energy to Lynch-Bages for more than 35 years. In 1974, his grand-son Jean-Michel Cazes set about restructuring and managing the estate and recently, in 2006, handed over the running of the property to his son Jean-Charles. Read less

This just smells classy with layers of cool reserved earth, spice, slightly jammy black currant, tobacco, and green herb notes. On entry this is a bit spicy and even shows a bit of oystershell saltiness that yields to precise, transparent black currant and black olive fruit. the tannins are melting away here giving this a rather broad feel but the acidity remains firm and drives the pencil lead and stalk herb finish on and on. At peak and holding for another 5-8 years. 92pts

Aromas are a little funky complete with cedar, a prevalent smokiness, dried earth, dried cherry fruit and black raspberries. Palate is powerful and acidic with dark fruit components, dried tea leaves and a smokiness becoming more earthy as the flavors linger. interesting complexity of the flavors, unique with each taste

Black olive, sweet black fruit aromas. Juicy black fruit flavors, good well balanced acidity, dark chocolate and a long complex finish.

Salty wet wool nose. Dry cold cedar and oak with some pencil shavings. Dry medicinal finish.

Briny, oysterish nose, with some gravel and tobacco flavors there too. Very smokey throughout, round and well integrated. Very nice.

A marvelous bottle of Lynch--better than the 1990 and just a notch below the 1989 in quality. Wondrous aromas of mint, berry and black currant follow through to the palate. Full-bodied, with supervelvety tannins and a long, long finish. Beautiful.--1... Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1988 Lynch Bages 750ml
