What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Winemakers Notes

"The best of the non-first-growth Pauillacs. A wonderful roast-beef and gravy scent, a melange of roasted berry fruits and an almost brandied extract, combined with generously textured tannins, seemed the very definition of the kind of ripe yet rippling gorgeousness which 1989 should offer at its best". (Andrew Jefford - Decanter Jan 2000)

Editorial Reviews

This is still so young with it's pencil lead, rubber tinged nose that offers up subtle notes of dried funghi and rich cassis extract. Big and powerful on entry with a closed, hollow midpalate that yields to a minerally finish that finishes with a lingering final of almost grapey cassis fruit. This is only the second bottle from a case bought on release. I've had more open bottles but these are ageing at a glacial pace. Absolutely pinpoint precision with the structure that offers up an airy elegance even with all this richness and power. 2012-2030

This is finally showing signs of maturity. It remains a big wine with exceptional depth but also exceptional balance that gives this elegance and finesse that is rare to find. Rich notes of cigarbox, black currant, and wood spice greet the nose and the palate has lovely funk and herbal, chipotle hints that really frame the deep fruit. A very long lingering finish completes the picture. This is still youthful and is a classic in the making with a long life ahead of it. 2009-2030. 95pts

Reviews

Rating: 91(+?) - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 103, July/August 2002 ($154-$239) Full, saturated ruby-red. Intriguing nose melds cassis, shoe polish, iodine and mint, along with a faint sweaty quality. Thick, sweet and large but a bit blocky and inelegant. Still quite young and bound-up. A backward, solidly structured wine that finishes with fairly tough tannins. Needs at least another five years of bottle aging.

So good. Classic black fruit. Dust and fruit and leather. It's smooth and soft and well structured and big but fades away delicately. Lovely flowers and licorice flavors with a bit of eucalyptus and did I say "So good" already? One of the best I've had.

Opulent aromas of berries and hints of eucalyptus and fresh herbs. Full-bodied and very juicy, with big velvety tannins and a ripe long finish. Flavor plus. Nice now but better with age. This has always been superb... Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1989 Lynch Bages 750ml

A meatier nose than expected to start. This is a very fruity wine rich with notes of black chocolate and cherry. Fantastically smooth and well balanced.

Big, bold, and beautiful. I wish I could drink this all the time. There's a certain something to Lynch Bages wines that is so clean and pure but also powerful.
