Château Lynch-Bages Pauillac 1985

Winemaker's Notes:

The 1985 has been totally disarming, seductive, and sexy since birth. Its corpulence, medium to full-bodied personality, low acidity, attractive silkiness, and copious quantities of herb-tinged cassis fruit have always made this wine a winner.

Château Lynch-Bages was owned by the Lynch family for three quarters of a century. They descended from John Lynch, a young Irishman from Galway who was chased out of his country in 1691. In the 18th century, Count Jean-Baptiste Lynch, mayor of Bordeaux, inherited the estate and handed over management to his brother Michel Lynch, who was also mayor of Pauillac during the French Revolution. Jean-Charles Cazes, highly respected in the Médoc for his experience in viticul- ture and winemaking, bought the property in 1934. With his son André, he devoted all his energy to Lynch-Bages for more than 35 years. In 1974, his grand-son Jean-Michel Cazes set about restructuring and managing the estate and recently, in 2006, handed over the running of the property to his son Jean-Charles. Read less

Opened on a particularly hot day after the restaurants ac had failed. Starts out very herbaceous, cedary and lighter weight. Slowly builds in depth and weight revealing a good core of curranty fruit to counter the herbal elements but remains solidly mid weight if wonderfully fresh with notes of cut leather and light tobacco. In this mag very feminine and still young.

What a terrific wine. With very little breathing the nose told one that this was going to be exceptional and there was no disappointment in the mouth. Perfect balance, soft tanins and a huge finish made this wine one of the better experiences of late.

Parker seemed to think this is about to decline. Drank a bottle January 3, 2010. Decanted and started drinking right away. took a break for 2 hours with wine in a glass. It did open up more to a wonderful boquet. This was a 750 ml. bottle kept in my cellar since purchased from Sherry Lehmann in 88. I expect well kept bottles will still have 5 years or more before decline.

Full red-ruby. Great nose combines plum syrup leather truffle spices and a faint herbaceous element. Juicy and very intensely flavored; not particularly complex but offers compelling inner-mouth perfume all the same. Finishes very long and bright with lovely penetration and horizontal tannins. This wine had the misfortune of following the Lafite and Latour flights in the tasting; while it lacks the class of the first growths it boasts sneaky intensity. Drink now through 2015. Our wine of the year in 1988 and still well worth it. The first bottle was slightly cheesy but the second one was superb, showing outstanding ripe berry, cherry and currant flavors and layers of silky fine tannins. Sexy and exciting. Drink now or hol...
