Château les Vergnes Red Bordeaux Blend Bordeaux Contrôlée 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Deep crimson with ruby tints. In the nose it is lively and generous with aromas of red fruit and liquorice. Structured and rounded on the palate with a long finish revealing lovely mature tannins – mild and silky. Just the wine to be laid down in a cellar for two or three years to reach its best. Perfect with meat in a sauce, game birds, and cheeses.

On the sloping plateau of Les Lèves, close to the fortified town of Sainte-Foy la Grande, Château Les Vergnes gets its name from the alder trees that surround it. Acquired in 1986 from the Maréchal Leclerc de Hautecloque family, it is the perfect expression of UniVitis winemaking expertise. The buildings are laid out around a central courtyard and date back to the beginning of the 19th century. Some buildings on the estate go back much further in time, however, such as the mill, the wash-house and the dovecote. Since it was bought by Univitis, the vineyard of Château Les Vergnes has been restored to its original size. It now covers some 130 hectares (320 acres) in a single strecht. 88 Ha (217 acres) are dedicated to red and rosé wines, 42 Ha (103 acres) to white wines. Soils are various: clay-limestone with large clay outcrops locally for the red varietals, silt-clay for the whites. Grape varieties are the traditional Bordeaux ones. Merlot covers 40% of the total production surface, Cabernet Franc 14%, Cabernet Sauvignon 14%, Sauvignon blanc 17%, Muscadelle 5% and Semillon 10%. Average age of the vineyard is 20 years. Since 2005, Château les Vergnes is qualified as an integrated farming Estate. Read less

Medium body, with decent fruit, flowers with dust, some tannins, and fairly smooth. A good value for the money.
