80% Merlot, planted on cold soil in the Premieres Cotes de Blaye; 14+% alcohol. Deep medium ruby. Black fruits and mint on the lively nose. Then sweet, lush and dense, with flavors of blackberry, cassis, black cherry and chocolate. In a distinctly New World style.

Lots of meaty black fruit, with notes of coffee and minerals. Medium-bodied, with well-placed tannins and a firm minerally finish. Best after 2006.

A brilliant sleeper of the vintage, the 2003 exhibits fleshy, fat, chocolatey, berry fruit with a hint of coffee in the background. Round and luscious, with abundant fruit, amazing sweetness, and high alcohol (14.7%), it is a blend of 80% Merlot and equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. It will drink well for 6ndash;7 years.

This sleeper of the vintage is a very good choice for everyday drinking Bordeaux that is already gorgeous to consume, and should age nicely for 5ndash;6 years or longer. The brilliant Stephane Derenoncourt is the consultant at Les Grands Marechaux. The blend is approximately 85% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The brilliant 2003 (7,200 cases produced) is a full-bodied, surprisingly concentrated effort with superb richness, silky tannins, a voluptuous texture, and a decadently fruity, hedonistic style. Drink this crowd-pleaser over the next 4ndash;5 years.

This sleeper of the vintage, which is grown in clay and limestone soils, consists of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Boasting a whopping alcohol level of 14.7% (2% higher than ever before), it possesses voluptuous fruit, a deep, Zinfandel-like berry characteristic as well as spice box and loamy soil notes, a plush, chewy texture, medium body, and no hard edges. Consume this hedonistic fruit bomb over the next 3ndash;4 years.
