Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

After not having given Bordeaux's much traction, a friend and I decided that we needed to see what all the fuss was about and picked up a bottle of the 05 Leoville Barton and brought it with us to a great steakhouse in San Diego. We had it with filet and it was nothing short of amazing. Silky, velvety, a touch of smoke, and an elegant finish that went down, down, down...

Undoubtedly one of the most majestic wines ever made at Léoville-Barton, this behemoth displays even more power and structure than it did last year. A prodigious, saturated purple-colored effort, it boasts layers of concentrated fruit along with notes of graphite, camphor, damp earth, and jammy cassis. Immense, even monstrous in the mouth, it possesses awesome extraction and richness, but the boatload of tannin will keep it from being fully appreciated for at least a decade, possibly longer. It is an authentic vin de garde for patient wine connoisseurs. Amazing vino! Anticipated maturity: 2012-2040.

This is the biggest, most powerful ever from Léoville Barton. Amazingly rich and silky. Lots of chocolate and blackberry aromas, with hints of raspberries. Full-bodied, with silky and round tannins. Great concentration. Long, long finish. Best after 2012.

Right from the early days of tasting in spring 2001, this was gong to be one of the stars of the vintage. And a star it remains. There is big, ripe fruit, with solid, ageworthy tannins. It may not be as powerful as some of the blockbusters of the vintage, but it is certainly more opulent and less classical than Léoville Barton can sometimes be.

Saturated medium ruby. Very black aromas of cassis, licorice and violet, plus a whiff of game. Dense, thick and youthful, with a compelling layered texture and major palate impact. But doesn't have quite the clarity or class of the '85 tasted alongside it. Very long, palate-staining finish features big but thoroughly ripe tannins. May ultimately merit a higher score. Drink 2008 through 2025.

Spicy, cedary and sharply focused in flavor, with tightly packed currant, berry, cedar and chocolate notes brilliantly balanced by oak. Smooth and concentrated on the finish. Drinkable now; could improve through 1998. 16,000 cases made.

Even better from bottle than from cask, and one of the finest wines of the vintage, this dense purple-colored 2002 reveals wonderfully sweet notes of charcoal, fresh mushrooms, smoke, earth, leather, cassis, and cedar. Full-bodied, highly extracted, broodingly backward, dense, and deep, this impressively endowed offering is built for the long term. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028. One of the classic wines of Bordeaux and still realistically priced, Leoville-Barton is becoming increasingly popular because of the extraordinary quality/price ratio it offers.

A well-structured, racy red. Lovely, fresh aromas of raspberries, cream and currants. Medium- to full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins which are firm yet silky. One of the more reasonably priced top '96s. Best after 2000.

Winemaker's Notes:

"...the inky/blue/black-hued 2005 Leoville Barton exhibits a sensational perfume of charcoal, burning embers, underbrush, cedar, creme de cassis, and subtle toasty oak. Painfully concentrated (much like the 2000 was at the same stage), with full body, admirable purity...94." WA 4/08.
