Food Pairings for Château Léoville Barton Red Bordeaux Blend St. Julien
After not having given Bordeaux's much traction, a friend and I decided that we needed to see what all the fuss was about and picked up a bottle of the 05 Leoville Barton and brought it with us to a great steakhouse in San Diego. We had it with filet and it was nothing short of amazing. Silky, velvety, a touch of smoke, and an elegant finish that went down, down, down...

Therersquo;s power in this wine, though itrsquo;s not the first thing you might perceive. Instead, the purple fruit gives a relatively light impression, round and smooth as river stones, until spice begins to come up from that supple, stone-hard center. An exotic spice builds around the tense frame, and then the wine keeps giving, and gives some more. Gracious as the Bartons themselves, this 2000 has an off-handed elegance that hides its power. Even after several days of air, the inner strength of the wine remains, as if time will only build on the elegance.
Even better from bottle than from cask, and one of the finest wines of the vintage, this dense purple-colored 2002 reveals wonderfully sweet notes of charcoal, fresh mushrooms, smoke, earth, leather, cassis, and cedar. Full-bodied, highly extracted, broodingly backward, dense, and deep, this impressively endowed offering is built for the long term. Anticipated maturity: 2012ndash;2028. One of the classic wines of Bordeaux and still realistically priced, Leoville-Barton is becoming increasingly popular because of the extraordinary quality/price ratio it offers.
Delivers breathtaking aromas of blackberry, currant, licorice and flowers. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and supersilky tannins. Dark chocolate, currant, berry and licorice follow through. This is racy and beautiful. Best after 2015.
This is the biggest, most powerful ever from Leacute;oville Barton. Amazingly rich and silky. Lots of chocolate and blackberry aromas, with hints of raspberries. Full-bodied, with silky and round tannins. Great concentration. Long, long finish. Best after 2012.
Right from the early days of tasting in spring 2001, this was gong to be one of the stars of the vintage. And a star it remains. There is big, ripe fruit, with solid, ageworthy tannins. It may not be as powerful as some of the blockbusters of the vintage, but it is certainly more opulent and less classical than Leacute;oville Barton can sometimes be.
What can you say about Anthony Barton? He has made yet another classic wine that will not be approachable for a decade, but will last 50 or more years. The inky/blue/purple-colored 2005 Leoville Barton offers up aromas of forest floor, cedar, spice box, black currants, and background oak as well as smoke. Boasting massive concentration, full body, and exceptional purity, but excruciatingly tannic and backward, this cuvee is meant for those with 19th century tastes, but also exhibits the purity and precision of modern winemaking. Patience is demanded with this beauty as it will take many years to approach any level of accessibility/maturity. Anticipated maturity: 2020andndash;2060+.
Deep ruby. Wonderfully perfumed nose offers cassis, minerals, tobacco, flowers, mocha and truffle. Bright, mineral-driven and concentrated, with terrific underlying backbone giving energy and definition to the dark berry, mineral and chocolate flavors. Thereandrsquo;s a floral lift here thatandrsquo;s exhilarating to find in the very ripe 2005 vintage. Finishes very long and classy, with a firm tannic spine. An outstanding vintage for this wine.
"...the inky/blue/black-hued 2005 Leoville Barton exhibits a sensational perfume of charcoal, burning embers, underbrush, cedar, creme de cassis, and subtle toasty oak. Painfully concentrated (much like the 2000 was at the same stage), with full body, admirable purity...94." WA 4/08.
