Château Léoville Barton Red Bordeaux Blend St. Julien 2005
"...the inky/blue/black-hued 2005 Leoville Barton exhibits a sensational perfume of charcoal, burning embers, underbrush, cedar, creme de cassis, and subtle toasty oak. Painfully concentrated (much like the 2000 was at the same stage), with full body, admirable purity...94." WA 4/08.

The history of Langoa and Leoville Barton is the history of a family who have managed to preserve their inheritance for more than 2 centuries. From one generetion to another the wines produced by the two properties have maintained the quality of their classification, offering wines at the very top of their appellation.
After not having given Bordeaux's much traction, a friend and I decided that we needed to see what all the fuss was about and picked up a bottle of the 05 Leoville Barton and brought it with us to a great steakhouse in San Diego. We had it with filet and it was nothing short of amazing. Silky, velvety, a touch of smoke, and an elegant finish that went down, down, down...

Even better from bottle than from cask, and one of the finest wines of the vintage, this dense purple-colored 2002 reveals wonderfully sweet notes of charcoal, fresh mushrooms, smoke, earth, leather, cassis, and cedar. Full-bodied, highly extracted, broodingly backward, dense, and deep, this impressively endowed offering is built for the long term. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028. One of the classic wines of Bordeaux and still realistically priced, Leoville-Barton is becoming increasingly popular because of the extraordinary quality/price ratio it offers.
Good full ruby-red. Black cherry, cassis and minerals on the nose. As fine-grained as the 2001, but with deeper, more chocolatey flavors of cassis, black cherry, licorice and minerals, nicely framed by harmonious acidity. Finishes impressively long, with substantial but fine tannins. Impeccably balanced wine.
One cannot admire enough proprietor Anthony Barton and his classic, potentially long-lived wines that are models of power, elegance, and longevity - in short, these wine symbolize what makes Bordeaux so world-renowned! Probably capable of rivaling the 2000, the uncompromisingly made, formidably powerful, masculine, and highly extracted 2003 has an inky purple color to the rim, a big, deep personality with a tight but promising nose of forest floor, creme de cassis, smoke, charcoal, licorice, and perhaps even truffle. It is layered, rich, and set for an exceptionally long life, but don't expect to get a lot of joy even in this somewhat overtly styled vintage for at least another 7-8 years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030+.
Very attractive blackberry and vanilla aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate, with chewy tannins and a medium finish. Slightly hollow midpalate but flavorful. Best after 2007.
Right from the early days of tasting in spring 2001, this was gong to be one of the stars of the vintage. And a star it remains. There is big, ripe fruit, with solid, ageworthy tannins. It may not be as powerful as some of the blockbusters of the vintage, but it is certainly more opulent and less classical than Léoville Barton can sometimes be.
This is the biggest, most powerful ever from Léoville Barton. Amazingly rich and silky. Lots of chocolate and blackberry aromas, with hints of raspberries. Full-bodied, with silky and round tannins. Great concentration. Long, long finish. Best after 2012.
Spicy, cedary and sharply focused in flavor, with tightly packed currant, berry, cedar and chocolate notes brilliantly balanced by oak. Smooth and concentrated on the finish. Drinkable now; could improve through 1998. 16,000 cases made.
