Château Léoville Barton Red Bordeaux Blend St. Julien 1990
Berry Bros & Rudd review: A monster of a wine, that is finally opening up to reveal its superb quality
and charm. Full-bodied, powerful, and loaded with flavours of forest fruits,
plums, cigar box, and vanillin. Robustly structured, with grainy, yet
beautifully integrated tannins. The formidable concentration of the fruit and
tannin will allow for at least another 15 years of graceful ageing. This
can be considered as an exceptional vintage, in par with the 1982.

The history of Langoa and Leoville Barton is the history of a family who have managed to preserve their inheritance for more than 2 centuries. From one generetion to another the wines produced by the two properties have maintained the quality of their classification, offering wines at the very top of their appellation.
I underestimated this wine young, as it continues to put on weight and character. In fact, of the great vintages of Leoville-Las Cases, this is one of the more forward wines, largely because of the seamlessness of the 1990 and its exceptionally sweet tannin, combined with relatively low acidity. The color remains a healthy opaque dark plum/purple. The classic Las-Cases nose of sweet black currants, cherries, minerals, lead pencil, and vanilla soars from the glass. Very full-bodied, expansive, and super-concentrated, yet so symmetrical and perfectly balanced (always a hallmark of Leoville Las Cases), this wine seems youthful yet very approachable. Had for thanksgiving, reviewing late. Really stunning. As I recall, the nose was all Brussels sprouts and broccoli and this huge green pepper, this blast of vegetables mixed with some very nice fruits, and the palate was very thought-provoking and complex. Didn't particularly go well with the turkey only because it was so much more than the meal, which was itself quite lavish. A delight and I'm glad our friend shared with us.
