Louis Latour:
The Latours have been vintners in Burgundy since the 17th century, slowly building a unique Domaine of 125 acres. Maison Louis Latour currently has the largest Grand Cru property in all of the Cote d’Or with a total of 71.58 acres. The Latours have been vintners in Burgundy since the 17th century, slowly building a unique Domaine of 125 acres. Maison Louis Latour currently has the largest Grand Cru property in all of the Cote d’Or with a total of 71.58 acres. The vineyards extend from Chambertin in the north to Chevalier-Montrachet in the south and are solely planted with the two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. All of the grapes from the vineyards we own are vinified and aged in the attractive cuverie of Château Corton Grancey in Aloxe-Corton. The winery was the first purpose-built cuverie in France and remains the oldest still-functioning. A unique rail-way system with elevators allows the entire wine-making process to be achieved by the use of gravity. This eliminates the threat of oxidation from unnecessary pumping of the must. Since 1985, Louis Latour has been selling the wines from its own vineyards under the name Domaine Louis Latour. The Latour family founded the ‘Maison de négoce’, an important shipping company, in 1797, and it is still based at 18 Rue des Tonneliers in Beaune to this day. The company is unique in Burgundy in that it is still family-owned and family-run, having been passed down from father to son for over ten generations. To celebrate our Bicentenary in 1797, we published a commemorative book and were admitted into the exclusive club of the Hénokiens. This club only accepts companies that are leaders in their respective fields, remain family owned, have a history of 200 years’ experience and still bear the name of their founder. There are only approximately 30 of these companies in the world. Maison Louis Latour ships its wines to over 60 countries worldwide. These world-class Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs can be found on the most famous dining tables around the globe. Read less

Massive investment in the vineyards and winery by billionaire owner Franandccedil;ois Pinault has in recent years given Latour the edge over its first-growth peers. In the difficult 2002 growing season, Latour made the wine of the vintage. The grand vin is aged 18 months in new oak barrels before release and is a classic Pauillac blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with some Merlot and a dash each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

The wine of the vintage? There are only 10,000 cases of this extraordinarily rich, dense 2002 that is as powerful as the 2003 (even the alcohol levels are nearly the same, 12.85%) . It is dark ruby/purple to the rim, with notes of English walnuts, crushed rocks, black currants, and forest floor, dense, full-bodied, and opulent, yet classic with spectacular aromatics, marvelous purity, and a full-bodied finish that lasts just over 50+ seconds. Huge richness and the sweetness of the tannin are somewhat deceptive as this wine seems set for a long life. Administrator Frederic Engerer seems to be more pleased with what Latour achieved in 2002 than in any other recent vintage. Hats off to him for an extraordinary accomplishment in a vintage that wouldn t have been expected to produce the raw materials to achieve something at this level of quality. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2045.

This vintage of Latour is showing marvelously today. It's full of tobacco, currants, smoke and ripe tannins on the finish.

ST: Red-ruby. Blackcurrant, graphite and minerals on the nose. Sweet, fleshy and dense, with an impeccable sugar acid balance. Strong mineral tones and firm acids. Finishes long and gripping, with excellent tannic spine and lift. A bit like the 2002 Les Forts de Latour but turned up a notch or two. But not quite as perfumed as the young 2004.
