Château Lagrange St.-Julien 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Château Lagrange was known in the Middle Ages as the Noble House of Lagrange Montei. Records of the successive owners go back as far as 1631. In 1824 the total production was 120 barrels (12 000 cases). In 1842, the ex-Home Secretary to King Louis-Philippe, Count Duchatel, left his mark on the property and the Médoc by introducing a drainage system in the vineyard. The Count brought the annual production up to 300 barrels. This was a golden age for Lagrange, with the famous 1855 classification awarding the property the title of Third Classified Growth. The beginning of the 20th century was much less glorious as the economic conditions deteriorated. Despite several changes in ownership the yields were lower and of lesser quality. A decline in business meant the estate had to be broken up : from 280 hectares (around 700 acres) in1840, the domain had been reduced to 157 hectares (392 acres) by December 1983, when the Japanese group Suntory bought it from the Cendoya family, owners since 1925. Another great 2006 St Julien. A bright garnet colored wine with a sweet red fruit nose. Red fruit attack - very soft round and voluptuous with lots of red fruit throughout. Sweet finish.

Weingut: Château LagrangeRegion: Bordeaux - Pomerol & Lalande de PomerolRebsorte: Cabernet Sauvignon, MerlotInhalt: 0,75 lAlkoholgehalt: 13,5 Vol.%Empfohlene Serviertemperatur: 16-18°CLagerfähigkeit: 10 - 15 Jahre ab Jahrgang Rotwein > Frankreich > Bordeaux

A very strong effort from Lagrange in 2006, this estate's tendency for including a nearly overwhelming oak component in its wines has been tamed in this cuvee, resulting in a better-balanced, potentially complex offering. Already well-known in the middle Ages under the name of Maison Noble de Lagrange Monteil, Chateau Lagrange is located in the Saint-Julien appellation. The estate currently covers 157 hectares of land, of which 115 are under vine, in a single block. The vineyard is planted on two Gunzian gravel rises. Production methods combine the best of traditional and modern methods. Vine density per hectare is high and the soil is cultivated in the classic Medoc manner. The grapes are handpicked and sorted prior to crushing. Traditional Bordeaux winemaking procedures are used and fermentation lakes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The wine is aged in oak barrels (of which 60% are new every year) in an air conditioned cellar.

A strong effort for this estate, the 2006 Lagrange competes with the finest wines of the appellation. One of my pet peeves with this wine is that the oak is often excessive, but in this vintage, it is... Robert Parker. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2006 Lagrange St Julien 1500ml
