What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Winemakers Notes

The winemaker at Lagrange is the brother of the winemaker atLéoville-Las Cases, so, family Christmases must be quite a treat.Unusually for the Médoc, this ever-impressive wine has been made withmore Merlot than usual (45%), rather than more Cabernet (46%). The yields aredown to a lowly 40hl/ha, which bestows the wine with great concentration. Thekeynote here though is the incredible ripeness. The attractive nose is elegantand pretty, while the wine itself is pure and generous with polished blackberryfruit and real sex appeal. Another great wine from this Berrys' favourite.

Editorial Reviews

Opening fairly toasty with a bit of green herb and bell pepper right up front before settling into a slightly roasted, tarry blackberry vein with notes of vanilla, buttery oak, and fudge under the roasted meat and herb notes. This is fairly full bodied with a big pop of sweet fruit on the attack. Opulent and round with blackberry and cassis fruit and quite some tannins as well as balancing acidity. The finish reveals a bit of earth and licorice as well as black spice and cigar ash before a final note of toasty oak. The oak is a bit more than I would like but the fruit should support it well.

Parker review: Sweet, toasty, oaky notes interwoven with hints of black olives, blackberries,
cassis, and spice box are found in this densely saturated ruby/purple-hued
2005. While rich, with impressive concentration and purity, it is also tannic,
full-bodied, and painfully backward and foreboding. This is another long-term
prospect that will require patience.
