Château Lafon-Rochet 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

"The opaque purple-hued 2012 Lafon Rochet reveals plenty of incense, blueberry, black raspberry and spring flower notes intermixed with a hint of forest floor. Rich and medium to full-bodied, it is a complete wine from beginning to end. It may tighten up once it’s in bottle, but this wine has 15 or more years of cellaring potential...90-92" WA 4/13

The origin of the “Rochet” name lies quite obviously in the word “roches”, as in the “rocks” that make up the soil of the Lafon-Rochet domain. Over the course of thousands of years, crumbling rocks from the far-off Massif Central and Pyrenee mountains were ferried by the Dordogne and Garonne rivers, eroded into pebbles and deposited in the limestone subsoil of Saint-Estèphe, creating a landscape of gentle, well-drained hills featuring a deep layer of gravel. The Lafon-Rochet domain sits on soil covered by a layer of gravel dating back to the period formerly know as the Quaternary (Günz) and features a mixture of quartz, gritstone, silex, volcanic lydianite, millstone grit, sand and clay. The diverse composition of its gravel layer combined with its excellent natural drainage system make the Lafon-Rochet domain a truly exceptional terroir. With its vast estate of 40 hectares, the Château Lafon-Rochet is one of the great ambassadors of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Ideally situated between the Lafite-Rothschild and Cos d’Estournel properties, it can proudly boast of its prime location in one of the world’s most prestigious winegrowing neighborhoods. Read less

Stone on the nose and maybe a little moss and hints of grinding coffee beans all embedded fine floral notes and subtle crushed berry fruit. This is firing on all cylinders, it's perhaps a touch lean or dilute but fresh with firm but well judged wood tannins, a bit soft on the backend this lacks the focus and snap of the best of the vintage but does show attractive, plump fruit, fine soil driven nuance and fairly big tannins that are ripe and help to flesh out the finish. 89pts

Chalk dust, pencil lead, spicy red fruits, wild raspberry with a touch of bramble – nice plush entry, good focus with ripe red fruits, nicely earthy mid-palate, tannins build on the back end with layered fruit and mineral notes, tannins are crisp and offer nice bite in the mouth but cut the finish a bit short, very solid though (89-90)

Tobacco, horse sweat and leather nose. Tobacco and spice across the palate - really its very spicy. Good midpalate with fine tannins. I really enjoyed this St. Estephe.

Kirsch and dark plum fruit is succulent, and offset nicely by brisk, chalky minerality, which gives a good driven feel to the finish.-J.M. Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2011 Lafon Rochet 6000ml

This ancient estate can trace its origins back to the early 6th century, at which time "Rochet" belonged to the vast Vallee Roussillon feudal estate. Chateau Lafon-Rochet stayed in the Lafon family for two centuries, despite the upheaval of the French Revolution. They were also owners in 1855, when their wine received the ultimate recognition as a great growth, along with only four others in the Saint-Estephe appellation. The chateau is in a choice location, in one of the most prestigious winegrowing areas in the world - between Cos d'Estournel and Lafite Rothschild (to the south). It is thus hardly surprising that Guy Tesseron, famous for the quality of his old Cognac, was attracted to Lafon-Rochet some 40 years ago. After acquiring the estate, he decided that the existing cellar was unworthy of such a fine wine, and had them razed. He built an entirely new one and, in a highly unusual move, built a new chateau as well, in the style of a 17th' century chartreuse manor house. Thank

I had some bottle variation with this blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon 20% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The 2010 from Lafon Rochet seemed slightly restrained and closed down on the three occasions I tasted it in Bordeaux. Dense black/ruby it displays sweet tannin excellent purity fresh fruit and a very primary almost grapy style with lots of fruit but at the same time a somewhat monolithic character. It should turn out fine but it certainly needs a good 7-8 years o

Tasted twice at the UGC and the Château, the Lafon-Rochet has a very lifted, pure bouquet with tarry blackberry, cassis and dark plum, all very well defined although needing time to coalesce. The palate has a tarry, graphite tinged entry, firm, sligh... Neal Martins Wine Journal. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2010 Lafon Rochet 6000ml

Dark ruby-red. Deep pure perfumed aromas of black fruits cured tobacco and black tea. Brawny and a bit chunky on the palate with a minty quality to the black fruit and flint flavors. Finishes with big chewy tannins and a persistent note of cassis. Shows a creamy texture and plenty of palate weight but seems a little unrefined presently. This will need a good eight to ten years in the bottle to harmonize fully and should go on for another 20 after that...Ian D Agata Stephen Tanzers IWC.
